Canterbury Bulldogs off to horror start to NRL season, prompting calls

THEY promised to bring back the madness, but Canterbury coach Dean Pay admits he’s now a different kind of angry after watching his team slump to their worst start in almost 50 years.

Pay remains without a win in his short coaching career after the Sydney Roosters sent his Bulldogs back to their kennel with an 18-point loss and their tails between their legs on Friday.

The Bulldogs conceded three tries in 38 minutes and never got within striking distance as they allowed Roosters pair James Tedesco and Cooper Cronk to click into gear at their new club.

It was the second week in a row Pay’s side gave up 30-plus points, following their heavy defeat to defending premiers Melbourne in their season-opener.

Not since the old ‘Berries gave up 93 points in 1971 have the Bulldogs allowed as many points over the opening fortnight of a competition.

“It’s becoming frustrating, that’s for sure,” Pay said.

Roosters backline stars Blake Ferguson and Latrell Mitchell joined Tedesco in combining for 562 metres, 15 tackle busts, four line breaks and two tries.

“In the first half their back five rolled out of their end too easily. We said we were going to try and nullify that, but I just thought we didn’t do a good enough job of that,” Pay said.

Pay was also unhappy with their restructured attack, particularly during a crucial 10-minute period in the first half when the Roosters had forward Isaac Liu in the sin bin.

Pay was left to rue the bunker’s decision to overturn a Marcelo Montoya try due to an obstruction, but was otherwise unimpressed by their play with the ball.

“We’ve worked hard in the off-season with how we want to attack and we didn’t get that on tonight, so that side’s frustrating as well,” he said.

Bulldogs captain Josh Jackson refused to use the daunting task of facing the Storm and Roosters first up as an excuse.

“It doesn’t matter who they are, 30 points isn’t good enough,” he said.

“If we want to be there in September we’ve got to match it with every team in the competition, regardless of how good of a footy team they are. Very disappointing in that aspect.”

Meh, new team against the premiers and a team that is way over the cap.... try reading into history before you worry about stats.

Worst bench selection and use of bench i have ever seen by a coach..

Frawley needs to go ASAP end of story. Actually there are so many issues with this team after 2 rounds..
I still don't understand his logic. Our bench lacked punch against the Storm and we needed better go forward while our starting 13 matched up well and gave us the room to play. Pay then...

1. Weakens the starting 13 with the relegation of Fualalo and promotion of Elliot.
2. Replaces a middle forward with an edge forward.
3. Only plays using 2 forwards off the bench all night.
4. Rotations are completely all over the place and make no real sense.

It's an absolute mess. No way would you see Bellamy relegating players from his 13 and promoting players off the bench that didn't perform in an attempt to strengthen his bench. Tolman and Elliott simply have to be dumped, no point in trying to fit them into the side.

It's time to promote the likes of Tualau, Ogden, To'omaga, etc. They're forwards with physical presence, leg drive and pace. Tualau at the very least should have atleast been in the side round 1, no idea what he has done wrong. Played well off the bench last year, performed well in the trials yet he can't even make the 21 lol. Just give them the chance to develop so we're in a better positon moving forward.

We won’t win vs panthers I can tell you that.
That was the first thought came to my head don't you worry... What I mean is its bound to happen when you have this roster against those teams.

You really think Elliot played that bad? He was solid and Fualalo was gun off the bench... I don't think Lock is an issue for us...

I'm praying they do. To'omaga not playing though. Hopefully last week was just the boys being complacent after beating the Panthers NRL side in the trial.

Fualalo does not need to be dropped, no idea what you see to hate him so much lol.
Dont hate him, we just have better forwards in the wings and he is down the pecking order.

If you remember Lloyd Perrett, same scenario

Elliott is ineffective, just gets smashed at first contact. Fualalo made a dent with his runs.
Attack wise yeahhh, His defence was solid as yesterday though. His actually changed his game up and used to run hard at gaps in defence lines but has this stupid step into defenders these days which kills me cause all he does is get smashed.

Fk your a spastic lol bench selections. The underlying issue is he isnt getting the best out of his players individually or as a team

Juicy, Fualalo is our best young forward. By far.
