If Potter even gets us top ten after our start, we’d be pretty mean to shaft him if we truly are about outcomes.

If Potter was ever an option, him performing now as a coach should have very little bearing on whether we take him as full-time coach or not.

Get why everyone is so happy and excited by how well he's doing, but he's coaching and the players are playing without any pressure at all. Basically a step up is not coming last.

Just because we're doing better, it doesn't mean he's the right long-term option for us.

Truthfully, I don't know who the right candidate is but all this carry on about Potter is a bit much

Flanagan is easily the best coach available.

Mick's in a tricky spot.
  • If the team drops their bundle and finishes 14-16 there hasn't been enough improvement to justify keeping him on.
  • If we push towards the 8-10 region, there's a strong argument we should be 6-8 next year, is he the guy to help the squad take the next step into a finals campaign?

I don't think he sees it that way, he's just doing a professional job, day by day, earning the players' respect and keeping it simple. He doesn't have to recruit, re-sign, let go players or deal with the inevitable politics, he just coaches players something he actually loves doing. If he wants to apply and Gould wants to give him the head coaching gig, then Gould will have to make sure that Potter is free to coach while Gould does the rest. I can see that working for the both of them.

Yeah I don't think he does either, speaking more from the club/Gould's perspective.

Should we be concerned about Potters ability to attract players or is that Gus' domain

I believe Potter was brought in to get the team firing and avoiding the wooden spoon at all costs.
The fact Potter has been told that it’s an interim coaching gig has worked in his favour as he has been able to make changes and begin to mould these players knowing he can be truthful to them.
Even after the last win he acknowledges there’s still
parts of our game we can improve where most coaches would take the win and rinse and repeat.

The Bulldog powerbrokers all know that with the addition of Kikau, Mahoney, Sutton and possibly other new players that we are pushing a top 8 spot for next season and would prefer a more seasoned coach to do the job however if the players respond to Potter and keep winning games it may force their hand to keep him there for now.

The "powerbrokers" will support whoever Gould puts up for the coaching gig. Potter has ben coaching for 17 years, he is very "seasoned", particularly after 2 years at the Wests (Coach Killer) Tigers.

There are 3 NRL clubs with interim coaches and we have the best one by some margin.

If we are still going to sign a coach, Id take Ciraldo with Potter as assistant.
Done properly this could become a great idea based only on equally joint coaching, it won't be easy but combined ideas has its merits and can create a great winning culture, Gus will need to work out the strengths and weaknesses of both coaches to see if they can become a winning combination.
On the flip side of the coin if their coaching philosophies clash they would fail miserably !

You can't basically have 2 head coaches. That's a terrible idea. There has to be a clear head coach and a then his assistants.

Flanagan is a top 5 NRL coach. He should be the target.

Not really. At prop King can play 60 min with TPJ & Thompson getting 50 min each.

Kikau plays 80 min.

Sutton, RFM, Topine & Jackson/Morrin share 2 spots.

Morrin/Jackson only used if needed.
