If we keep Sexton you’d have to think he’ll be on 700k max which means we’ll still have plenty of cap space to sign some good young middle forwards like Leo Thompson or Lazarus Vaalepu.

Rumours are Sam Walker is chasing 1.4 a season although that was before he did his ACL and Ben Hunt wouldn’t come cheap.

The curious thing about Hunt is if he would improve after leaving the Dragons. Luke Brooks looked a hell of a lot better after leaving the Tigers and Curran and Tracey looked awesome for us this season versus their form at previous clubs…
700k has he hit that much actually yes 700k max what is he on now!! Half that but Eveyday all I hear is Ben hunt from everyone.

is ben going to the dogs i say how do I know. All I know is that Gus was banging on that door when he asked for a immediate release

if Sam Walker is available you would be mad not to make a play for him. But signing him then inhibits the pathway of Mitchell Woods. But of we snared Walker that, woukd,be,a,massive couple but I don't see it happening. In the meantime who is glibg to sign for us for 2 to 3 years, knowing they are keeping the seat warm for,Mitchell Woods?
The only benefit of home grown talent is the 2 or 3 years you might have them on a cheaper deal when they have their breakout season, rather than having to pay big to recruit someone at that same ability.

If you dont win a premiership or go close in that period, you'll miss your chance and will have to pay market value to resign that talent.

So if you're comparing Walker with Woods, one has already made his mark in the game but will come at a cost. The other may or may not make the same mark, and while he may be cheap atm, you'll only get a couple of seasons at cheap rate before his manager gets you to pay him market rate, or he'll walk.

This is what CC and Gus needs to navigate in the coming years.

We could barely win a game before Sexton came into the side yet fans want to toss him aside lmao
I dont want to toss him.
Im happy to have both Hunt AND Sexton.

All i know is that we need more from our halvesin these finals games. They need to take control and become alphas. If the guys we have there dont have it, lets get players that do.

One of the Chooks major problems, of which they have many, is Walker's absolutely abysmal defence backed up by his inability to work to towards a strategy. He is always 100% off the cuff in defence and attack, he can't think past the current play. He sees every play as an opportunity for him to do something magical. He can not, or refuses to, apply himself to a game plan.

He also sets the standard and other players follow or when they do try to set the standard he breaks it. No discipline, no game control, no thinking of the next play or the play after that, it's all about now. An NRL game is 80 minutes, Walker has trouble with 80 seconds.

There are reasons why the Chooks have such a shocking record against Melbourne and Penrith and Walker is #1.

Team First
They have a discipline problem. That's their biggest issue. But what you say is also true.

I just dont think he's the main issue though.

Vaalepu I'm definately keen on, especially with the increased opportunity he'd walk into here, he mightn't need overs. As opposed to Thompson, he already has a defined role...

Hodkinson was underrated and we haven’t had a better halfback since!

Crazy to think we let a genuine rep level halfback go to keep Moses Mbye but that shows how important these decisions are.
We let him go because both his knees were shot.

Unfortunately his body never let him get to the level his skills were heading.

The advantage we've got with Sexton is that he's already on the books and we have $700k leftover apparently. So we could possibly say, well toss 4/5/6/700k on top of this season's pay if you take it as an advance on the next two contract years if he gets a huge offer from elsewhere.

I'm in the retain Sexton camp. Hasn't had a lot of NRL time prior to joining us. All told he's had around 2 fill seasons over four years. Given that he's still a bit green, he was taking some pretty big steps this year, looked like he grew in confidence.

If people are judging his form on the finals match, you have to look at the way the prick with the whistle restricted our space. The halves decided early on that we weren't getting time to kick on the last and opted for some early kicks. It didn't work out the best. But short of switching for a new ref through the game they didn't have a lot of options.

As far as Hunt goes. He's still a decent player. But will be 35 next year. His price tag will be restrictive and with players in their mid 30's season ending injuries are an increasingly probable scenario. If the club lure him over, I'll accept their choice. But I think his best days are likely behind him. Sexton looks keen as mustard to improve and I think he will. If we get our forwards setting a slightly better platform for 80 minutes he'll have time to be more creative.

So I hope we keep him. There's no guarantees that our young halves will kick on in two years. Why throw away a good option that loves the club for a journeyman on his way out.
Toby Sexton can help us win the comp, stability is going to help him and the team more than ever.

He has great attitude in so many areas that'll just help him become better and better, eventually he could even become a mentor for the young halves.

The mindset CC is instilling plus Critta around, experience and team chemistry gained in the squad this season, Gus's dealings and communication, the club being as professional as they should. Sexton has weighed these in, coupled with his drive to learn and work that it's the best opportunity for him to be the best player he can be and that's all we need, we don't need the world's greatest halfback to win the comp, look at Sherwin. Sexton actually reminds me of Noddy, good mentality, keenness and communication.

I still dont think Hunt is the answer. I know these words are going to hunt me, but Id prefer DCE over Hunt.

Look at the difference between the 2. I dont see how Hunt has improved Flopagan at all they dont work together as a team

Brooks made it to his first final under the wing of DCE. We need someone with the mindset of DCE if we were to be contenders
a few things here. Brooks is a much much better player than Kylie Flanagan. Kylie is not a 6 is a reserve grade 7.
