Being someone who had an ICT background, I was a Systems Administrator - for many years too. I spent over 8 years at the same company. Now i'll admit that about halfway through my tenure there, I went a little stale and lazy and couldn't be motivated to apply for better jobs. I blame myself for that. The reason for that is that I knew the restructure was coming and was hoping to apply for a better job there so I could stay with the same company.

Then lost my job due to aforementioned restructure. The funny thing is that restructure should've happened at about the 3-4 year mark I was there... when I was waiting for it... not the 8th year. Then I hit a rough patch after that. I couldn't find permanent work for 2 years. I just kept swinging from contract to contract, one bad job after another, going weeks, sometimes even months without work. I was able to land job interviews, but couldn't really get myself over the line. Thankfully at the time I didn't have a mortgage.

Now, I'm an office manager - pretty much a career goal that has been achieved. However I know that things don't last forever and all good things must come to an end, but where I am now is the break I really needed - at least for my CV. It's imminent that another restructure will happen around here... that's all that seems to happen in Government.

I don't think I'll ever return working in the ICT sector - at least not in the technical aspect. I've had enough of that. It changes too frequently too quickly. Not enough "settlement" time.

I get paid to sit around isolated using the internet all day.

If you ever hear about me going insane like Michael Douglas in falling down then you should not be surprised?

He was a defense worker in that movie though wasn't he? If I recall correctly, he lost his shit because he couldn't see his daughter.

@Mr 95% please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong sir.

I'm an Accountant, public practice.

Look, the work itself is repetitive and dry sometimes, but I'm a patient man and can cope with it.

My goal is to operate my own accounting business soon. The amount of billing I do on an average day to clients currently is my weekly wage covered, more or less. Imagine working 1 or 2 days a week for a full income. I can dream!

Hollywood wound not have the balls to make a movie like that today!

Aspiring porn star. I just haven't found any roles requiring a slightly overweight fellow with zero staying power and an inchworm. I'm hopeful that my big break will come along soon.

Agreed - with all the Nazi and gay shit that they referenced in that movie.

Well you can dream but as long as you enjoy the work that's all that matters.

They should make movies lile that still though. Theres a lot of truth in it.

Guys who generally go around talking tough calling others fagget are trying to throw a rug over who they really are!

E.g Jeffrey Dahmer, queer as fuck, trys to stop being queer by killing queers.

Theres another spiritual group who is famous for hating and killing gays while masking that they are gay at the same time!

IT Infrastructure Manager.

If I had my time over I would pick something other than IT.

Some people may find this weird, but one thing I don't want to do is work from home. Now without doubt it has it's conveniences - work in whatever clothes you want, wherever you want, no need to commute etc... but that in itself is where it ends. I find it hard to be confined to my bedroom for hours on end. I would much prefer to be in a buzzing office where it's more alive. Then I'm in the CBD - so lunchtime comes and I can go wherever I want - Pitt Street Mall, Broadway, Circular Quay, Darling Harbor... I'm fortunate enough to live in the best city in the world (although it was better 15 years ago), and I like to make the most of it.

Having said that... I avoid the city at all costs on the weekend.

Interesting @Wahesh! Didn't know you worked as a System Administrator.

Been going nearly 10 years now in the IT industry and am long overdue for a changeup.

Currently working as a System Administrator in the Victorian Public Service, which is what you'd imagine it to be. There's no real long term planning and the work is easy. I'm here because I have a wedding to save for and my last job sucked my life away.

Would love nothing more than to change careers completely, but when motivation in general is low and you have so many financial pressures in life, it becomes hard to make a change.

Yeah bro, I was in the game a long time and it started getting to me. Before my time there was up I applied for a job at an American company with their AU base here in Sydney. They had openings in 5 different areas and asked me what I specialised in. I told them media (backups, restores, data centre, business continuity etc…) they ended up asking me questions in the interview about comms and ports and shit I have no clue about. I came so close to telling them they have no idea how to run interviews but I just couldn’t be bothered with them anymore.

The bad thing about working in the front end of ICT (1st, 2nd and 3rd level support) is that technology evolves and changes so quickly, and you have to adapt. I’m not a fan of that.

Your wedding is your priority now man - stick it out until then at least and enjoy your life :grinning:

I don't mind the keeping up with technology stuff. It kind of naturally happens and comes day-to-day while on the job anyway.

My issue stems once you get past the Service Desk sort of roles. You're part of shit project after shit project dealing with idiot Project Managers and Team Managers and you wake up one day not remembering the last time you actually accomplished anything. I feel like there was more time spent in meetings than actually doing anything. At least with the Service Desk support there was that satisfacion of solving problems countless times a day.

Thanks man. As dry as my job is at the moment, I've been in worse roles and situations and I'm overall pretty happy over here in Melbourne for now... so can't complain.
