The Bulldogs are exploring the prospect of star signing Luke Thompson arriving early to allow him to be part of this year’s premiership campaign.

Canterbury signed Thompson on a three-year deal beginning from 2021, but are hopeful he could play some role this year if St Helens are prepared to grant an early release. The Super League is yet to confirm a restart date, although August 1 has been pencilled in as the earliest possible target. That date appears ambitious given a growing number of English Premier League players have tested positive for the coronavirus.
The blue and whites have some room to move in their salary cap and their squad list given only 28 players were named as part of their Project Apollo bubble group. With up to four spots still vacant, the ‘family club’ hopes one of them could be taken up by Thompson.

“We’re looking at what’s happening in Super League and what opportunities there may be to bring Luke here as early as possible,” Bulldogs chief executive Andrew Hill told the Herald.
There’s lots of hurdles for us to overcome at this stage and there has been no real progress on that opportunity.”

Thompson’s addition to the squad this year would be a huge boost for Canterbury. The English international is considered one of the best props in the world, winning the Harry Sunderland Trophy as man of the match in Saints’ Super League grand victory over Salford last year.
However, many challenges must be overcome for the shift to happen. The NRL is yet to officially decide how far it will push back the June 30 transfer window, while the Bulldogs must decide if there is enough upside in striking a deal with St Helens at a time when travel and lockdown issues could result in limited game opportunities for the 25-year-old in 2020.

The Bulldogs are hoping Thompson won’t be the only English international to join the squad in the foreseeable future. The club is one of the frontrunners for the signature of disgruntled Raider John Bateman, who is testing his value on the open market.
Canberra are keen to keep Bateman in the nation’s capital but don’t have the salary cap room to provide the payrise he is seeking. Raiders coach Ricky Stuart and his former assistant, Bulldogs counterpart Dean Pay, have a strong relationship that may help the transfer to Belmore become a reality.

The Bulldogs have also been linked with Andrew McCullough, the long-time Brisbane hooker who has just joined Newcastle. However, Hill said: “I’m happy to go on record to say that we have had no discussion about Andrew joining the Bulldogs, with all due respect to him.”

There have also been suggestions that Josh Reynolds could be returning to Canterbury, but the former NSW pivot is expected to remain at Wests Tigers

Hope he comes but have really low expectations on it happening as there’s so many hurdles to cross in rugby league terms and travelling terms. Wouldn’t he have to self isolate for 14 days on arrival as well?

With everything that's going on I'd just be happy with him being here for day 1 of pre-season for next season anything else is a bonus.

Would love to have him early but can still see travel restrictions being a hurdle.

St Helens would probably slap a transfer fee on him too which would go on our cap. While that wouldn't be the end of the world you'd have to see how early he could get here to see if it was worth it.

Imagine a forward pack of Thompson, a firebrand Napa (not the powder puff he is now) Bateman, Jackson and whoever. Fair enough taumalolo is the hardest running and hitting back rower in the Comp. but for mine Bateman has some skill and finesse. You’d take Bateman at 800k over fafita for 1.1 that’s for sure.

I recall the Wabbits clearing this up with the NRL, back when they wanted Burgess back from Union. "South Sydney’s bid to entice Sam Burgess back to rugby league has been given a healthy boost after the NRL confirmed that any transfer fee paid for his return would have no salary cap ramifications for the club."

Of course that was them, for us you can bet we would get slugged.

If he doesn't get a release it will be interesting to see what happens if the Super Leagues does start up as they had three plans and one ended in November, 2nd ends in December, 3rd ends in January.
If any of those eventuate Thompson will be playing for St Helens on our time.

That's a valid point.

Anything past 1st November means StHelens owes us. If we get paid a "delayed transfer fee" does that come off our Cap for next year? That would be the reverse of us paying a transfer fee to them which would probably be added to our Cap.

OR

Whatever they pay him past 1st November isn't included in our Cap for 2021.

Timing wise an end of November ESP GF probably OK. That gives him December off to get here, 14 days of quarantine (if it's still in place) get established and start training with us in January. Any later than that is a problem though.

I rather he come next year... Rather not expose him to how poor we will be this season. But props to the club if they get him here early I guess.

Raiders paid £200,000 transfer fee for Bateman too but I can't find any clarification on if it counted on their cap or not.

Another factor to take into account will be the end of the NRL season. Off season training might be pushed one or two months back due to the late finish.

I don't think any transfer fee could be added to the cap but it would go in the clubs coffers. If he's at St Helens past Nov 1 then that money won't be on the Dogs cap until he arrives.

The Dogs could always play hard ball and just enforce the deal and have him here from Nov 1
