Thanks to the SMH...

The Lord Mayor of Melbourne has launched an unprecedented attack on Sydney's monopoly hold over the NRL grand final, branding ANZ stadium a “rundown” venue in a “godforsaken” part of the city.

Robert Doyle, former Victorian Liberal leader, told 2UE's Steve Price the grand final should be held at the MCG because Homebush was "a little on the small side".

“They're going to get 60,000 people in some rundown stadium in some godforsaken suburb, where you have to take a car trip for a half an hour before you can get a decent meal,” Cr Doyle said.

“Whereas if you put it at the MCG this Saturday night, you could get 100,000 people...”

His comments come on the back of Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls's criticism earlier in the week.

“The (Melbourne) Storm's record of four consecutive grand finals really makes you wonder whether or not the rugby league grand final ought be played here in Melbourne,” Mr Hulls said.

Their appeals echo those of countless Queensland politicians and fans who clamour each season for the NRL to break with precedent and allow Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium to host a grand final.

ANZ Stadium seats 83,500 for a rugby league game.

Price was outraged on radio today, pointing out Homebush was the geographical centre of Sydney and asking Cr Doyle if he'd been there during the Olympics.

“That was 10 years ago mate,” Cr Doyle responded.

“You can get 10,000 cars in there, you're going to have to either drive there or travel by train.

“Do the Sydney people really have loyalty and affection for the stadium?”

He further endeared himself to Sydney listeners by asking Price: “Would you live next to that stadium?”

“Thousands of people do, there's nothing wrong with it,” Price replied.

Cr Doyle said Melbourne would host a string of major international sporting events this year, starting with the Australian Masters golf tournament.

“We're about to have a little thing called the Spring Racing Carnival, after that we'll have the Australian Open, after that we'll have the Grand Prix,” he said.

Their exchange descended into farce when Price asked Cr Doyle when Melbourne last hosted the Olympic Games.

“1956 and since then you've had a flea bag of an event called the Commonwealth Games and that's it,” Price said in answer to his own question.

Nice one, fantastic self-promotion from the Vics.
Maybe we'll have the Boxing Day Test at the classiest cricket ground in Australia?
This bloke Doyle has more in 5 minutes as Lord Mayor than he did in the years he was Victorian Opposition Leader!

F**king retards. If Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia so much then why don't they ever get more than 12k to watch one of the most successful teams in modern Rugby League?

What have been the crowds to their finals this year again?

I like Melbourne but I can't stand Melbournians.

I'm a proud Victorian/Melbournian but I think Robert Doyle has missed the mark completely here. That stadium is fantastic and the NRL grand final should never be played outside of Sydney in my view.

Lol mate they get 70,000 - 80,000 on a nearly weekly basis for AFL home and away games, crowds aren't in issue with Melbournians, its the TEAM, the Storm will never work because league simply isn't liked in Melb, simple.

Haha. Couldn't help but have a chuckle at this.

In all fairness, I think it has taken 12 years for the Storm to finally get a proper stadium so 2010 onwards will be the time to see whether they can grow their attendance. If they still get 11,000 with a good side in a 31,000 capacity stadium, then you cannot help but start asking questions

the Vic government are trying to win the bid to host the NRL gf at the MCG after the ANZ deal expires.

they can see it as a cash cow to bring tourists from qld, nsw and maybe NZ and also a huge boost for the Victorian economy

What? Exactly. That's exactly my point and exactly why it's laughable to even dare suggest that they get the NRL GF. They don't deserve it.

You would hope that will make a difference. If their team is as successful anything less than 20k a game at that stadium would be a failure.

A brief history of Melbourne ....

• The last of the Australian Major metropoli to be established.
• Farmers all locate to WA, SA, QLD an even TAS prior to establishing VIC.
• First clony of 300-odd arrive in 1803 at Port Phillip.
• Second settlment established at Portland on West coast.
• John Batman (that's no joke) ... founded Melbourne in 1835.

• GOLD discovered at Ballarat and Bendigo in 1851 and so begins the "Goldrush"
• The biggest influx of immigrants Australia has ever seen begins and their population grows 7-fold over the next decade. Population swells to the 2nd biggst city in the entire British Empire behind London.
• In 1891 an economic bust occured whereby banks, busines and stockholders all went belly-up. Population slows, people migrate out to WA and Sth African gold-fields in record numbers.

• 1901 - Australia federation held in Sydney.
• Via the Goldrush prosperity in the previous 50 years, Melbourne has established itself as the economic and financial centre of Australia.
• 1905 Sydney regains the mantle as Australia largst city.

• Between 1901-1927 Melbourne is the capital of Australia.
• In 1928 Canberra is replaced as the capital, after a decision on whether it should be Sydney or Melbourne could not be reached.

• After World War 2 - Prosperity increased again on the back of exports of high priced wool.
• Hosted the Olympic games in 1956.

So you see, Melbourne was the last to be discovered, got big quick, went bust, got overtaken in size and stature, dug it's heels in, refused to comply, wanted their glory back, never got it, struggled to beat Sydney in terms of growth and long term prosperity, and for close to 150 years .... the psyche of Melbourne people is based on an insecurity that they too are special and important.

Look at our sporting heritage !
Look at our arts and culture !
Look at our shopping !
We host this !
We host that !
Sydney sucks, why do you wanna go there for ?
Look at me, Look at me !!!

Born Losers !

If the Swans made four straight AFL grand finals and our mayor suggested the Grand Final be moved to the SCG, we'd be promptly told to f@ck away off. And all the purists will say "AFL had it's roots in Vic"

Well rugby league has primarily had it's roots in NSW hasn't it?

If Melbourne lose and then go through a period of decline, is this Doyle ballbag still going to give a sh!t about the NRL grand final being played in Melbourne.

The NRL Grand Final is and always should be played in Sydney. It's a tradition and tradition shouldn't be fcked with.

Typical Mexicans.....They only bow to one thing.....AFL.

The Storm are only in Melbourne to entertain the ex-pats from Queensland and New South Wales....They really don't get it do they.

when they give live TV broadcasting may be worth arguing. Is the GF even on live in melbourne or just endless repeats of the GayFL GF

That point above is a fantastic point and one that should be raised and acted upon in Victoria.

Although the points made by Doyle were rubbish and completely incorrect, I must say that all this Melbourne bashing does make me laugh. As a fellow Canterbury fan, it is easy for me to have a chuckle at the Melbourne/Victoria bagging on here.

However, putting rugby league aside for a split second and Mr Doyle's stupid comments, please look at our sporting heritage, arts and culture, shopping and general greatness (except for Storm fans) and surely you could only agree that Melbourne is nothing other than great. lol

It took the swans 25 years to become part of the sydney sporting scene, the storm have done very well in 10 years, plus they get a new stadium next year.

Don't get me wrong, I 100% agree with you there, Melbourne in no way deserves an NRL grand final, and they don't deserve a bloody Origin match either, that pisses me off!

"IF" the NRL final was ever to be played outside of Sydney, and I think it is inevitable one day, then the blatantly obvious and smartest choice is Brisbane, as much as I hate QLD'ers, they do support the game amazingly well and would be most deserving.
