With the amount of guns in their society, any major breakdown of it will be brutal. The problem they'll face is each side will see the other as the "bad guy" that warrants shooting.

Ironically those weapons that will potentially get used in some sort of civil war are in the hands of civilians because:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

A law that was fit for purpose in 1791, contributing to a nightmare scenario over 200 years later... who would have thought...

Perhaps the minor positive here is that any potential moves towards a civil war will be hard to keep secret in this day and age. Lone wolf style attacks in the near future seem more worrying. Considering that one or two people with their personal armouries have been capable of doing some seriously horrendous rampages in schools and from a hotel room. I think the potential threat from someone who misguidedly thinks a murderous rage to oust a wrongly elected government (according to Trump at least) is a far bigger threat than a well organised force emerging.

The question has to be asked, why are these people being so open about it? The guy below, a historian who specialises on the American Revolution, perhaps gives some insight:

He makes some good points about the variety of people that were involved. In the end you would like to think that many of them will have opened their eyes to the fact that this was a hugely self serving act from Trump to go with the many in recent times and that he himself stayed well away from the area and harms way. Another big point in this post is that it does seem that Capitol Hill was operating with minimal security forces. Things could easily have been much worse. And it wasn't only Trump who supported this.
