BULLDOGS’ SHOCK BID FOR COWBOYS WRECKING BALL
The Bulldogs know they need a circuit breaker to try and turn the club’s fortunes around and have discussed making a play to land the signature of Cowboys wrecking ball Jason Taumololo.
It’s probably about 66/1 and drifting in terms of actually happening but it shows the lengths the Bulldogs recruitment team is prepared to go in a bid to fix the club.
Sure Canterbury-Bankstown have also got Kurt Capewell, Toby Rudolf and Brent Naden on their radar for next season, but North Queensland’s Dally M Medal winner Taumalolo is the big fish club insiders believe could stop the rot.
Similar to when South Sydney signed Roy Asotasi from Canterbury-Bankstown all those years ago, which paved the way for the Bunnies to land players like Greg Inglis, Sam Burgess, Isaac Luke and Ben Te’o.
How would it work? Taumalolo still has six years to run on his $1 million a season deal with North Queensland after this year.
The Bulldogs would have to agree to take the contract over through until the end of 2027.
Taumalolo, 27, has been in the headlines at the Cowboys this season since being called out by new coach Todd Payten in round one. Since then, he’s suffered two separate broken bones in either hand and has not played a game.
RAIDERS’ BAD BLOOD WITH PANTHERS BUBBLES AWAY
It’s a real shame Penrith don’t play the Canberra Raiders again in the regular season after all the dribbling spin in the wake of Green Machine boss Don Furner labelling some of the Panthers carry-on “mug lair” behaviour.
Furner challenged Panthers coach Ivan Cleary to “teach his players some humility” after the Raiders were hit with a $10,000 fine for the club physiotherapist ending up in the middle of an all-in melee in round five.
For the record, the player who sparked the incident was not Raiders captain Jarrod Crocker pushing Liam Martin. It was Panthers centre Stephen Crichton.
It’s part of the reason why Crichton was fined $1350 for contrary conduct.
Also for the record, we can’t recall anyone in the NRL world taking umbrage at some of the Panthers wanting to sing and dance as a form of celebration.
We love the way the Penrith boys can bust into song. Get the boom box out all you like, go for broke, it’s brilliant.
But suggestions the Crichton incident with Tapine resembled anything to do with showing character is jibber jabber.
DRAGONS STAR ON THE OUTER AS HISTORY REPEATS
The Matt Dufty contract situation at St George Illawarra is starting to look eerily similar to the Cameron McInnes contract scenario at the Red V from earlier in the year.
The Dragons tap danced around the McInnes situation for as long as possible by stipulating they didn’t want to make an offer that would “insult” their skipper.
In reality they wanted to make a play to bring Andrew McCullough to the club as the first choice hooker and McInnes was politely squeezed out.
The end result was McInnes joined the Cronulla Sharks on a four-year contract starting in October this year.
Back to Dufty. The Dragons fullback reiterated earlier this week he thinks he’s only a 50/50 proposition of remaining in the Red V beyond this year.
Which considering he’s scored six tries in the opening six games along with making six line breaks, four try-assists and four line break assists is an intriguing ploy.
But clearly the Red V new coach Anthony Griffin believes Dufty is still very much a work-in-progress.
The Dragons also showed their hand in February when they re-signed Cody Ramsey to a three-year deal until the end of 2024.
When Griffin was asked about Dufty after the Dragons upstaged the Eels in round five, these were his words: “He’s a good kid, he’s been improving.
“He needs to keep learning the fine art of playing fullback in tight football games like tonight.
“He needs to keep improving to unlock his potential. He’s great with the ball but he’s still learning the finer arts of mastering his craft.”
The case in point was when Dufty failed to ground the ball in-goal against the Warriors in round six and Paul Turner raced through and scored.
With the Warriors leading 6-4 and 25 minutes gone, Dufty needed to make the play.
A game-breaking performance against the Roosters at the SCG on Anzac Day will put Dufty firmly in the shop front window for rival NRL clubs.
TRI-COLOURS CLOSE IN ON ALL BLACKS COUP
The Sydney Roosters are closing in on signing former All Black halfback TJ Perenara as a back-up hooker after the sudden retirement of club champion Jake Friend.
The Perenara deal is going to happen but first the 69-Test All Black needs to complete his Japanese rugby union commitments until May 23.
Then he’ll have to go through two weeks quarantine before joining the Chooks so realistically we won’t see Perenara playing in the NRL until mid-June at the earliest.
The Roosters are confident the rugby union halfback will make the transition to playing in the middle of the field in rugby league. Perenara will most likely become the Chooks no.14.
