A woman who claims she was raped by New Zealand rugby league star Michael Crockett told her sister he had hurt her, a court has heard.
Crockett, 25, is facing a committal hearing in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court today on three rape charges, stemming from after-game celebrations last August.
His alleged victim, 19, gave evidence in closed court today.
Her 21-year-old sister told Deputy Chief Magistrate Helen Syme in open court that the young woman had returned from a nightclub in Sydney's Kings Cross district with a man about 3.45am on August 6 last year.
They had been partying at the Sapphire Suite nightclub in Kings Cross earlier that night, she said.
The sister told the court she had returned early that morning to the flat they shared with Warriors player Evarn Tuimavave.
When she went into her sister's room to borrow make-up, she said she saw a man, now known to her as Crockett, in the bed.
As she stuck her head in the door, on her way to work just before 7am, she had seen Crockett lying on top of her sister, the woman said.
Her sister had insisted Crockett leave, and the woman said she had offered to drive him back to the eastern suburb of Coogee with Tuimavave.
"We waited in the car and nobody came out, so we left," she told the court.
Her sister had called a short time later in distress, saying Crockett had taken her phone, the woman told the court.
"Evarn said, 'Why would he do that? We are sponsored by Vodafone,' " the woman said.
"[She replied] 'Because I didn't want to have sex with him, he hurt me.'
" Michael had put his hand inside her and he had hurt her," she said.
The woman agreed with Crockett's lawyer, Geoffrey Bellew, SC, that she had not heard anything while in the apartment that morning to suggest her sister was distressed or in a situation she didn't want to be in.
She said her sister's tone of voice had changed when Crockett was on top of her.
"But I didn't think anything had happened to her at that stage," she said.
In a dark suit and supported by his parents and other family members, Crockett sat silent behind his lawyer in the court.
The hearing is continuing.
