Record Sydney FC Crowd Sees Wanderers Take The Points

A record 40,388 crowd and a spirited second half display from Sydney FC was not enough for the Sky Blues as they fell to two first half goals in the first Sydney Derby of the 2013/14 Hyundai A-League season.

The sell-out crowd at Allianz Stadium witnessed an early header from Iacopo La Rocca followed by a Shinji Ono strike midway through first half, to hand the Western Sydney Wanderers the bragging rights.

Head Coach Frank Farina was forced into two changes from the team that started against Brisbane Roar a week earlier with injured duo Alessandro Del Piero and Pedj Bojic replaced by Mitch Mallia and Tiago Calvano while Matt Thompson made way for Rhyan Grant.
The opening exchanges were nervous and tense with the only chance of note being an eighth minute Ali Abbas free kick that sailed high over the bar.

Sydney were pressing and allowed the Wanderers little time on the ball as the Sky Blues chased down any threats, with Nick Carle particularly troublesome in his more advanced role dispossessing Beauchamp more than once.

Warren and Ryall were proving to be Sydney’s main points of attack as they ventured down either flank but with little joy as the Sky Blues struggled to find that penetrative ball.

The Wanderers took the lead on the 12th minute after an innocuous looking free kick from Ono deep in the right channel was allowed to float across the Sky Blues box. Iacapo La Rocca out-muscled his marker to head home from the six yard line.

A series of fouls dominated the following proceedings as both sides found time on the ball hard to come by.

On the 26th minute the Wanderers were in again. Shinji Ono attempted a deft flick over the Sydney defence which failed but the resulting ricochet landed at his feet and he was able to slot home from close range.

The game was being played at a relentless pace as Sydney rallied and won a free kick in the 32nd minute just beyond half way. Nikola Petkovic stepped up for the Sky Blues, smashing the underside of Covic’s cross bar.

The players were able to catch their breath as play was stopped when Grant was taken off in the 40th minute with a knee injury; Matt Thompson coming on as his replacement.

Sydney FC continued to push with Mallia sending a long distance shot over the bar, before the referee blew for half time.

Farina made one change at the start of the second half bringing on Yairo Yau for Mallia and it almost had an immediate effect as Garcia broke down the left sending in a low cross that just missed Yau’s outstretched foot.

Sydney FC looked the brighter of the two teams in the early exchanges and the Cove were soon off their feet appealing for a penalty in the 64th minute.

Ali Abbas showed a neat piece of skill to turn his marker and break into the box before he went down, however referee Strebre Delovski waved the appeals away.

A spate of yellow cards followed as the Sky Blues had to whether a storm of Western Sydney attacks, as Vedran Janjetovic stood tall to keep the Wanderers at bay.

Sydney’s best chance of the second period came in the 77th minute as Yairo Yau hit the side netting.

Nick Carle tracked back tackling Shinji Ono before turning and advancing towards the by line. He whipped in a deep cross that found Yau unmarked at the far post who shaped for the volley but hit it wide.

The pace of the game slowed as Western Sydney sat back content with defending their lead, although they did hit the post late on from a Jerome Polenz free kick.

With 4 minutes of stoppage time added, Sydney FC pushed bodies forward however it was to no avail as the full time whistle sounded.

The Sky Blues will head to Perth next week looking to change their fortunes before another bumper crowd is expected when Melbourne Victory visit Allianz Stadium in two weeks time.

Del Piero in doubt for Glory trip

Hurting after a loss to their fierce local rivals and struggling badly to score goals, Sydney FC may not get any respite with skipper Alessandro Del Piero no certainty to return for next week's trip to Perth.

The Sky Blues sorely missed the veteran Italian on Saturday night as they were totally outplayed and outfought by the Western Sydney Wanderers, going down 2-0 in front of more than 40,000 fans at Allianz Stadium.

Just like in the 4-0 drubbing to Brisbane seven days earlier, Sydney seemed rudderless without their talisman as the Wanderers comfortably claimed local bragging rights.
With the pressure building after back-to-back defeats Farina will be desperate to have Del Piero available for the away clash with the Glory but admitted it may not be the case.

"We'll assess it during the week but (the long flight) is not an ideal one," a disappointed Farina said.

"We'll see how he goes during the week but if he's able to train properly we'll assess it then.

"With Ale, he's coming up to 39.

"We have to be realistic; we know Alessandro's not going to play 27 straight games for us this year. That's reality and we have to adjust to that."

After getting through a light training session on Friday in the lead-up to the Wanderers game, Del Piero was keen to at least sit on the bench for the derby but Farina pulled rank.

"It's round three... it was way too much of a risk," the Sky Blues boss said.

"He hadn't trained with the squad all week. He was keen towards the end of the week to sit on the bench but that could have been even more dangerous.

"You've got to be careful; it's still only round three."

There would not have been much the marquee man could have done as first-half goals to Iacopo La Rocca and Shinji Ono ensured a memorable night for the Wanderers.

While Farina praised the effort of his side for not throwing in the towel after the break, he admitted they will continue to struggle unless they are more disciplined in defence.

"We've got to cut out our errors and mistakes. In Brisbane it cost us the first two goals and again tonight," Farina lamented.

"We work on it but those errors we have to get rid of.

"It comes down to discipline in terms of what your job is. We've let ourselves down in that area.

"It puts added pressure on people and you start to do things that you wouldn't normally do."

Sydney's night was compounded be what looks like a serious knee injury to midfielder Rhyan Grant, with scans over the weekend to determine the extent of the problem.

Farina is hopeful Socceroos midfielder Brett Emerton (back), defender Pedj Bojic (calf) and former skipper Terry McFlynn (groin) will all be available for the clash with the Glory.

Sydney look so lost in attack without Alex.
I know. But at the same time we still have a few players out: Emerton, Mcflynn, Triantis, Antonis, Gameiro. Alessandro Del Piero does leave a big gap in attack and we need him back ASAP. The other players mentioned will also play big roles once they return from injury. Also Ryan Grant is under an injury cloud after the wanderers game and could be out long term.

Its funny how you guys can all of a sudden support the wanderers. Being a new franchise in the A-league you guys must have supporter another club before they entered the comp and now have abandoned that team and just jumped on the western sydney bandwagon. Nothing beats loyalty and thats why ill always go for the sky blues.
Loyalty and Sydney FC?
