NSW coach Ricky Stuart says if Todd Carney is sacked by the Sydney Roosters, rival NRL clubs shouldn't be allowed to pounce.

An announcement on Carney's immediate playing future will be made on Tuesday after he was caught drinking on the weekend despite earlier promises he wouldn't consume alcohol.

Strong action is expected to be taken against the serial offender, who was sacked by Canberra in 2008 and threw his career into jeopardy again a few weeks ago when he was arrested for drink driving and put on a strict rehabilitation plan.

Speaking on OneHD's One Week At A Time, Stuart said Roosters chairman Nick Politis would be "heartbroken" at Carney's latest breach of trust.

The former Cronulla coach was in charge of the Sharks when Greg Bird and Brett Seymour were sacked for misbehaviour, only to eventually be allowed to play for rival clubs the Gold Coast and Warriors respectively.

Stuart said the Roosters shouldn't be punished for Carney's mistakes.

"There would be a number of other coaches right now really monitoring this situation closely," said Stuart.

"That's why I believe the poor behaviour at one club shouldn't be another club's profit.

"There's got to be a process put in place. I've been in this position before at the Sharks where we sacked players for misdemeanours for poor behaviour but it doesn't do you any good because they just go to another club and they come back and bite you."

Stuart said Carney has put himself in a position where the Roosters don't have a lot of room to move.

The State of Origin mentor said making his Blues debut should be a long way from Carney's thinking at the present.

"He's got a lot more on his mind today than worrying about NSW. The big thing we've got to look at here is this bloke's welfare. He's got a major problem and it's really important we put his case first with his health and his alcohol problem," said Stuart.

"The first thing he has to do is make a huge apology to his club, Nick Politis and more importantly his team mates."

**** off Sticky, Carney ****ed up and should be deregistered completely. All this talk of no other clubs should be allowed to pounce, go and ask Canberra how they feel about that after they did the right thing in tearing up his contract...

I think what he is saying here is that it's not fair that a player gets sacked for poor behaviour and then another club can go and pick him up and reap the rewards when the player should actually be being disciplined.

Not only does it take the piss out of the rules set by one club, the player doesn't really learn anything or face the consequences that he should for his actions as he just goes and plays and gets paid somewhere else.

That's what pillow is saying, though. Raiders did what they had to do and the Roosters benefited from it. What makes the Roosters so special?

Either way it's a fckd up rule that a sacked player can play for another club.

The rules need to change NOW. Too many clubs have got away with it in the past.

Exactly. The raiders did the right thing and got shafted hardcore. When the NRL re-registered Carney there should have been a clause that the Raiders had first choice to re-sign him. Same with Bird and cronulla, Lyon and Parramatta etc.

But that would be applying common sense.... NRL and Common sense are like oil and water.

People are quick to jump all over Tandy and Carney but they forget gambling and alcohol are addictions that are not so easy to abstain from in a twisted society at that age, the Roosters probably need to keep a closer eye on Carney and get him in involved in some kind of hobby.

but you dont want a situation where a player gets dismissed by a strict club and then isnt allowed to play anywhere

Its these kind of arguments that annoy me, almost like playing these guys out to be the victim. The fact of the matter is, these guys CHOSE to drink, or gamble or whatever and then couldnt stop themselves from keeping on doing it because of no self dicipline. The fact that he was doing the whole dodgy vodka in the orange juice shows that he knew he was doing the wrong thing, thats why he tried to conceal it. In the case of Carney he has had a much better and bigger support group than the average Joe Blow suffering from the same issues and has p1ssed in the face of everyone. They are grown men and have to be held accountable for thier own actions. By making excuses for them, they recieve little to no punishment and dont learn a dam thing. Lessons not learnt in blood are quickly forgotten.

He needs to step away form the NRL so he doesnt further damage the brand and get himself sorted out away from the spotlight.

Just de-register him until such time as he can get his drinking under control (I.E. Never).

Roosters are incapable of disciplining their players (see last few years).

You have little understanding of the illness of an addiction, the guy is an alcoholic therefore will want to get drunk and runnamuck for the rest of his life and will have to dig deep for discipline for years until he can control it with confidence.

Ok, so the fact that he had so many chances while at Canberra, x countless amounts of chances at the roosters, you still think he should be given another chance?

Why don't you offer to help the poor bloke out? Take him under ur wing and help him out.

This Guy was Banned from Goulburne ffs. If that doesn't spark a light in ur head to change than I don't know what will

Because he hasn't had an actual incident, is a human being and a talented footballer with a possible future in SOO, I don't think they should burn him over this.
All he has to say is he can't cope with societies evilness, he tried doing the right thing but everyone else kept being dropkicks.
