Yeah he had/has some depression issues. But is in a good space now. Was personal training at Sydney Survivors in the shire until recently. Still lives out west and the commute to the shire was a bit much for him. Great fella.

That explanation is 90% right.
The dogman is responsible for the load at all times even when in the crane operator has full view of it.
If you ever watch crane operations, the dogman is the person in the landing area, usually with a whistle or a radio, directing movements.
