News Round 1 Predicted Teams: Bulldogs

Round 1 side pretty much was settled from towards the end of last year. The only changes I see would be who does take JACs spot and finding a spot on the bench for Sitili and if Armone is up to speed to restart his NRL career.

From today’s training session it looks like Montoya is in the box seat for Fox’s wing spot. Sitili will be on the bench 100%. Not sure about Amone I think Trials will tell us more about his progress.

Little bit disappointed if monty gets the spot, even though I love that he has that dawg in him.. wilson has a lot of potential in his speed and agility and I fear we could lose him to an older vet that I still don't know why we bought. Tuala makes sense for depth, but montoya was never coming to play reserve grade. It was an interesting decision considering how much wilson played last year.

I don’t think the decision is final yet. However today at least Montoya got the nod ahead of Wilson at training. It’s a long season. It’s good to have some healthy competition for spots.

I hear you but I can't see Montoya coming here to play reggies unless he's injured or somehow super unfit. Competition is definitely good.

And people were actually arguing with me when I said that Montoya (if fit) would start round 1 ahead of Wilson & Sua.

Any real suprise packets this year, a player who will burst onto the scene or exceed expectations? For mine it comes down to Todd, Hayes, Haywood (as a starting 9 if Reed goes down) or one of the young halves during the second half of the season O'Niell or Toa.

Montoya is an aggressive player. Runs hard from kick returns and flys through on a kick chase hitting hard in defence. Interesting will be to see if his defence reads have improved.

Sua starting is straight delusion. Wilson is hope but Montoya is literally a 100 game vet. It's just logical. Wilson is a barely 1st grade bred.

We have a young squad that exceeded expectations last year.

This year nearly the entire team will be fitter, faster, stronger and most importantly more experienced playing the way Ciro wants.

As for the new players in the squad, put any reservations or doubts on hold, because just like last year we have signed each one for a reason a they will be used to maximise their strengths and you can add Fifita to that list.

The x-factor will emerge - with so much exceptional talent coming through our systems expect the unexpected.

Not happy about Montoya to be honest. He’s a come-in leave your opposing winger open defender.
I thinking the same I think I think Wilson has been waiting long enough and he has proved he can step
Inside and is damm quick

I actually would put Haywood back to cup he I didn’t see much off him as a striker yes he can hooker but from what I saw was a lot of confusion and he gave up a tackles on the 4th just stopped and lied down.
Drop him

The Dogs are on the rise and whether thats a GF win is hard to tell yet. I don't think they are quite there yet and thats a fair evaluation considering they are building and not buying a comp. Its a 5 year plan and I think the expectation is by the end we will be GF ready. Anything short of that is a bonus.

I think as part of that is having a longer term plan and part of that is development where we provide our own star halfbacks and fullbacks. I don't think it would have been wise to by a star half like Luai as that would end Woods prospects. Sp Sexton is idea for blooding Woods and hopefully he and Burton will be our homegrown halves combo for years to come like in the past.

I think we are pretty well exactly where we should be in year 3. We have totally transformed the side. There was still some dead wood last year but now just about every spot is NRL level or close and will expand our options and create competition.

I think with Thompson next year that will push up into solid top 4 territory and able to compete with Storm and Panthers. We almost beat the Storm in Melbourne last season. We are not far away.

Sitilli and Amone are just what we needed and we should be better with them. I agree there maybe some rebound after achieving above expectations last season. But overall we will start the season in a better position and should win at least as many games. I also think we will be better prepared to peak at the right time and be able to hang in there in most games.

Hopefully we make the finals again and this time go at least one step closer. Maybe even a GF qualifyer or even a GF loss which would give us good experience in how to win. Most sides who build towards a GF win usually lose a GF or go close beforehand.

PS I would not discount Fifita. If fit and injury free he could be a fill in Thompson this year. But he has not had a preseason and is down on fitness. But once he gets there he will be an asset I reckon. If thats the case then suddenly we have three new aggressive forwards compared to last year.

We absolutely must avoid the carnage of Good Friday. If we are smart, we go in with a clear mindset, do not get baited, do not play into the emotion and mind games.

We always lose players to suspension and other BS on Good Friday. MUST STOP NOW!

Round 1 will be tough, it will be down to how we control our aggression and build into the game. We have to get into the grind, no complacency.

Our attack was super clunky to start 2024! So the key will be our fitness heading in to round 1 but also our combinations in attack. It could still be a little clunky but hopefully no where near the 2024 early season. Keep building and trials will reveal a lot as they did in 2024. Sharks trial in 2024 was a really good indicator for the coaching staff.

I want us to put that phat phuck fatrell on his back after what he did to JAC

Any idea why Fifita has not been able to have a proper pre-season this year?
Has he picked up another injury?
He looked ok in the purple team pic - fun games challenge - even if he is a bit dwarfed by Jack Todd.
Someone posted that he was a distant last in a run (5km??).

DSF's 2023 ACL injury was supposed to be 'game ready' after rehab,by mid-late last season.
He played 5 games in reggies in 2024 - av 35 minutes/game.
Made good metres & PCM, struggled a bit fitness wise.
Lateral movement was compromised in D (not uncommon after ACL rehab) & he made a few too many errors.

But there is promise, IF FIT, he could be a decent Prop rotation with Max n Sam.
However, he's gotta be able to tackle like Max n Sam.
Those boys have good technique & go hard every minute they're on the field.
If DSF wants it enough, he knows what to do - surely?!

Maybe Jack Todd is a better solution - although - I keep banging on about Todd at #13.
Perhaps Tom Amone?
Or young Jack Underhill??

Any which way - we seem to have significantly better options than in '24 - Potato, Tetevano, Farmer Silly & the White Knight.

As far as peaking at the right time goes, I think the additional forward depth is crucial for that. Late in the season a few of our bigger names had weeks where they looked spent. With some of our youngsters having the benefit of a little NRL experience to build confidence and an off season to physically develop and work on weaknesses, hopefully the coaching staff feel better about rotating players to give our big names some selected rest periods when needed.

I think that King played for an extended period with a fractured wrist. Curran played through a minor shoulder injury and I'm sure there's others who should've sat out a week or two that didn't get that benefit. Ideally Ciraldo has faith that the youngsters can step up this year.
