The Roosters have identified Storm hooker Brandon Smith as their priority target to fill the hole left by club legend Boyd Cordner following his retirement.

The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield revealed in an exclusive Roosters boss Nick Politis and general manager of football Daniel Anderson have contacted Smith’s agent, Stan Martin.

Smith is off-contract at the end of 2022 which means rival clubs are free to talk with him as of November 1 and the Storm hooker will be arguably the hottest player on the market.

Big news not really now considering B Smith was never leaving Storm unless Bellyache did..He will get a massive upgrade now Craigs staying for 2 more years.

Manager talks will ensure hes well looked after indeed..

So wait. He ain’t off contract. So if they contacted him that’s allowed?

or is it you just can’t sign a player/register the contract until they start their final year.

I’m sure he will go to the roosters for $150k because he wants to “develop” his bank account.... sorry I mean game :p

to be honest the guy is worth 800-850k. If he stays at storm for less he is ripping himself off. If he can get more then $850k he’d be mad not to take it. Only so long loyalty can last today.

No surprises there they haven’t been the benchmark team for a while now and they would be hating it waiting for their assault on the market

I doubt we’d have the $’s to sign him now. Roosters might move on a lower grade player so they’ll have plenty of cap space.

depends what the Roosters and our max offers are really. A top team doesn't pay overs for players.

If the NRL is serious about making the salary cap be a levelling field then they need to set minimum values for players like Smith....so if his value is set at minimum of 700k the roosters or other clubs can’t offer him 500K....it’s the only way to stop elite teams from always grabbing the best players

Players like Smith and Munster have only ever played in good systems.

They are great players but they do have the luxury of not having to do it all on their own.

They are protected by being in strong teams.

Munster was poor in origin 1 and 2 because his forwards got dominated.

Its hard to judge their real talent levels because they have such great players around them.

You mean game on.
15 years ago - yes

Hopefully in 5 years maybe

But I just think given where both sides are the rorters will get him. I can’t remember many in recent times who they have lost who they wanted to keep or not recruited who they wanted to get.

RTS was one back in 2017 but they are few and far between

It appears that clubs ( and I guess it includes the above) can speak and discuss but not entice a player to break a current contract. Does that therefore mean they can discuss the financial enticement and length of offer etc as long as they don't actually offer them a formal contract before Nov 1?

The NRL confirmed there would not be any investigation into the matter as anti-tampering rules do not prevent clubs meeting with contracted players as long as they’re not trying to entice them to break their existing contracts.

Isaako and Pangai are free agents at the end of next season so technically the Tigers - or any other club - are permitted to meet with the players to discuss a deal for 2023, but no contract offer can be tabled until November 2021.

These are older articles which precede the above one which tend to contradict what has been said this year....

Under the NRL's anti-tampering rules, clubs can only begin talks with players from other teams on November 1 the year before their contract expires.

Players can sign on the first day of the season, which starts on November 1, meaning they can put pen to paper 16 months out from when they might pull on a jersey for that team.
