Peter V’landys is set to intervene after powerbrokers George Peponis and Nick Politis quit in a day of incredible drama at the NSW Rugby League.

ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys is ready to intervene in the civil war at the NSW Rugby League after power-brokers doctor George Peponis and Nick Politis dramatically walked away from the organisation.
Peponis and Politis tendered their resignations after the annual general meeting on Friday afternoon. Peponis confirmed he had stepped down as chair after nearly a decade in the role.

V’landys told News Corp he was concerned at the developments at NSW headquarters, which kicked off when Cronulla chef executive Dino Mezzatesta was told he couldn’t run for the board.

Corporate governance to us is paramount,” V’landys said.

“We don’t have the power over these organisations but we fund them. Accordingly, if we fund an organisation, we’re going to make sure the funds we’re giving them are used for the proper purpose.

“If someone complains to us that they are being unfairly exempted, we would investigate it.”

More to come

Sounds like a storm in a teacup. The NSWRL isn't as powerful as it was and I'm sure Politis will still run the NRL in his role on the NRL Committee. It's probably that they couldn't afford to justify keeping Politis and Peponis on those roles or both decided to move on because it wasn't worth the hassle anymore.

I didn't know peponis or Politis had roles. Hope that Politis stepping down winds up making the salary cap apply to the Roosters again/for the first time.

It's only the NSWRL that they're stepping down from.. Politis still has a role with the NRL commission and obviously has the same power as always with no cap scrutiny and players like Radley continually winning appeals at the judiciary when they should be suspended for 3-4 weeks.

Here is some more context about this situation:

$20m-a-year breakaway plot emerges after shock NSWRL boardroom blow-up

At least two clubs have discussed breaking away from the NSWRL after a boardroom blow-up which saw chair George Peponis and Nick Politis leave the state body, per a report.

Nine reports the fallout from Friday’s annual general meeting could see the Sydney clubs walking away from the NSWRL, therefore taking their funds directly from the NRL, rather than having a $20 million grant from the NSWRL distributed among them.

It would mean the NSWRL only controls the State of Origin team and country league, while playing all three grades on the same day would be on the table again.

It is not known which clubs have discussed the breakaway plan.

The news comes after Peponis and Politis resigned from their board roles, following Sharks CEO Dino Mezzatesta being blocked from running for a position due to a conflict of interest.

They were also unhappy that Deborah Healy, the only woman on the board, lost her position to William ‘Smiley’ Johnstone.

Mezzatesta has reportedly complained to ARLC chair Peter V’landys about his nomination being blocked and was seeking legal advice ahead of Monday’s ARLC AGM.

NSWRL deputy chair John Anderson backed chief executive Dave Trodden.

“The NSWRL board has no intention of breaching the confidentialities of a private board meeting yesterday, but it objects to the manner in which events that transpired were reported,” Anderson told the SMH.

“In particular, the board is disappointed by what appears to be a targeted personal attack on chief executive David Trodden for simply doing his job. The board will now move to consider the casual vacancy that exists for one director and the appointment of a new chair.”

The report stated there was unease surrounding NSWRL director Geoff Gerard, who was elected by the clubs, and opposed an ARLC constitutional change allowing those involved with a club to be eligible for the commission after a one-year break, instead of three.

There are now no club representatives on the NSWRL board.

So basically it's as I initially thought in that they're making it seem bigger than it is as usual.. The NSWRL has become weaker and weaker over the years with less and less funding. Politis and the others want to cut out the middle man and can't be fucked wasting their time with the NSWRL anymore. It's more boardroom crap about who gets what position and won't actually change much in the grand scheme of things.
