Maybe we can afford to keep them all now?

THE NRL has given the biggest hint yet of what the salary cap will look like beyond 2017.

The governing body sent an email to all 16 clubs on Thursday telling them to prepare for a spend of $9.14 million, including allowances for a squad of 30 players and six development list players.

While it appears the NRL and Rugby League Players’ Association are edging towards finalising the figure, it’s stressed the $9.14m mark is only a guide for clubs to help them prepare their rosters.

But the RLPA stressed negotiations are ongoing.

“The RLPA has been made aware of correspondence sent by the NRL to clubs in relation to the salary cap for 2018,” an RLPA spokesperson told foxsports.com.au.

“Our understanding is that the clubs have been directed to comply with a salary cap figure that was set out in the NRL’s proposal of 30 March 2017.

“From the RLPA’s point of view, the salary cap figure for 2018 and beyond must be agreed through the collective negotiation process.

“No such figure has been agreed at this point in time.

“We are in the process of preparing our response to the NRL’s initial offer, which will include a proposed salary cap amount.”

With clubs, players, and managers all trying to prepare for season 2018 and beyond the uncertainty of a salary cap has created tension between the NRL and stakeholders.

So nothing has been settled ?
The NRL just plucked a number out of their asses that was somewhere between their offer and the RLPA's counter-offer ?

The biggest problem with the cap is the clubs want 130% the sum in funding.

So the clubs wagered a war to get the 130% (which might be unsustainable). And now the clubs and players association want a 10 million cap (which will equate to over 200 million). The game doesn't make that much money.

What should have been done is pay out the full cap. Set it at 10 million atleast so the players don't feel jipped. Then let the teams make their own profit through sponsorships and ticket sales/memberships. Your memberships should make you 2-3 million. Your sponsorships should make another 5. If you have a leagues club you should get getting some coin from them too. If 15 million isn't enough to run football operations then you are spending too much.

But I do feel the error was made with the 130% funding to the teams. The game can't justify those numbers while increasing the cap at the same time. Too much money will go at the top end of the game and nothing will trickle down to the lower graders and junior systems.

Also with the cap increase it seems like a big jump from 7 million. But when you consider an extra 5 roster spots are required it would be closer to a 20k increase over all on a per head basis (ok fair enough no team has 30 players on the same coin but just for a perspective it's 2 million dollars up with an extra 5 players and a few development players).

Fair enough you will only need to outlay big money on half a dozen top line players and have another 10-15 good players and fill the remaining spots with back ups. But even the minimum contract is increasing too.

Definitely reactive management by the nrl. Makes you wonder if they even had a solid plan of what they intended to do leading into the season.

I heard strong Sydney clubs and the Players association are arguing the amount to be increased and want 10mil. Considering the NRL are being strict on this we might see increase to just under 9.5. Good news.

In my opinion, the good news is we have already signed two internationals before knowing this. Allthough they probably already new this. But either way we have still picked up two quality players and we may even be able to keep all the others that we want to keep. Great news!!!

So an average of around or close enough to 300k per player.
Why is anyone questioning whether we can afford these new signings

I think a lot of the player managers would have factored in increases into the contracts. È.g if the cap goes up by 30% we (the manager and the player) gets this much extra.

Especially Jackson and klemmer would have it factored in seeing as they re-signed long term knowing the increase was 12 months away.

So it's not as clear cut as an extra 2 million. It's 11 new players on the roster too and all the contracts that have already had increase clauses put in.

General questions:

1. What sort of money would be paid for the development players?
2. What is a typical minimum payment contract (what you'd pay players no. 26 to 30)?

Do we get a 750k exemption because moses hasn't developed in to a half back .
Or a full exemption on Reynolds because he hasnt mentally developed past a 16 year old ?

is thing everyone is missing... RLPA, Clubs and NRL still negotiating...
Its yet another convenient exclusion of fact for coaches, clubs or fans to bag the NRL...
