The NRL is awaiting advice from the state and federal governments.
The NRL could lock fans out of stadiums as early as tonight, with advice from the federal and state governments expected to be delivered to the governing body this afternoon.
The Herald has been told by sources within the NRL that it is putting measures in place in case fans need to be turned away from tonight's games.
With Prime Minister Scott Morrison and state premiers gathering in Sydney today for a COAG meeting, the NRL has been told it is likely to be given advice mid-afternoon in relation to mass gatherings.
NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg flew to Townsville this morning for the opening of the new stadium ahead of the Cowboys-Broncos clash tonight, however the game is bracing for the possibility of an empty stadium.
The NRL has set up a coronavirus sub-committee which has been corresponding with clubs about the potential ramifications, including the financial implications of playing without crowds.
It comes after the season-opener attracted a crowd of 21,363 for the Parramatta Eels and Canterbury Bulldogs game on Thursday night, despite the match at the 30,000-seat Bankwest Stadium declared a sell-out earlier in the week.
The next NRL game to be played is at 6pm when Canberra host the Gold Coast.
The NRL is also making plans around the potential of having to postpone the season if the COVID-19 outbreak worsens, however that could be fast-tracked if one of its players contracts the virus.
One factor the NRL is considering is where the people are coming from to watch matches. The Formula 1 in Melbourne, which has been cancelled, has a high number of travellers from Europe and Asia attending.
