Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake - Chile (5.37pm AEDST.)

To give you a sobering perspctive, it's the equal 5th biggest of ALL TIME !!!
The quake in Haiti recently measured a mere 7.0 !!!

100 km (60 miles) NNW of Chillan, Chile
100 km (65 miles) WSW of Talca, Chile
115 km (75 miles) NNE of Concepcion, Chile
320 km (200 miles) SW of SANTIAGO, Chile

UPDATED 7.30pm : Tsunami Alert HAS BEEN ISSUED for coastlines of Chile, Peru Coloumbia, Costa Rica, Panama and Antarctica.

No word on whether Australian or New Zealand eastern coastlines will be affected at this stage.

In the 1¾ hours afterwards there have been 9 aftershocks between 5.2 - 6.9.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center issued also warned of a “potential tsunami threat; to New South Wales state, Queensland state, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island".

Any potential wave would not hit Australia until Sunday morning local time, it added.

If a tsunami is generated, the first wave could reach the Chatham Islands (Waitangi) by approximately 7.05am NZ time, and could reach the main two Islands at East Cape by approximately 7.54am and Dunedin by 7.58am. The first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest . Waves may continue for several hours.

SUMMARY:
Tsunami warning for the marine environment for NEW SOUTH WALES.

Threatened areas extend from Broken Bay to Point Danger.

Possibility of dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding
for several hours from 08:45 am (EDT) Sunday.

Further south from about 8am Sunday for coastal areas from Broken Bay to Gabo
Island, there are likely to be unusual currents and tides during Sunday. At
this stage, those areas, including the coast and bays around Sydney Harbour,
are not considered to be under threat of significant tsunami effects.

Sea level observations HAVE confirmed a tsunami has been generated.

I'm so so glad that our earthquakes aren't centered in-land. We had a 5.8 one the other night but no one felt a thing but that's cos it was just a bby one.
