BULLDOGS SHUT DOWN STAR RECRUIT’S EXIT LINKS
The Bulldogs have denied they are looking to shop English import Luke Thompson to NRL rivals.
Channel 9’s Danny Weidler reported the Bulldogs responded to an interested club by forwarding it to Thompson’s agent, but had no intention of paying part of his salary to play for another team.
“Bulldog Luke Thompson talked with GM Phil Gould today and told him he’s not looking for longer term deal at rival club,” Weidler tweeted.
“Dogs not looking to offload him. They forwarded interest from rival in him to agent. Never considered funding his move elsewhere.”
It was reported that Thompson had been granted permission to negotiate with rival clubs in a bid to free up salary cap space at the Bulldogs and that the Tigers and the Cowboys were the interested parties.
“It’s come out that he’s been given permission to negotiate,” The Australian’s Brent Read told Triple M’s Rush Hour with MG.
He hasn’t really hit the heights has he? He was at the centre of a huge bidding war between the Warriors and the Bulldogs when he was first coming to Australia and he got a huge pay packet as a result of that... we’re talking $800,000 to $900,000, he’s on huge dollars.
“So, Canterbury got to the point where they decided to give him permission to look around.
“There’s the Wests Tigers, who are one of the clubs interested in him, and I’m hearing a whisper that the Cowboys are watching very closely as well and they will assess over the weekend whether they will make a move for Luke Thompson.
For the Cowboys it will come down to money and how much Canterbury are willing to chip in to supplement a deal but the Cowboys missed out on Dale Finucane so they’ve got some money up their sleeve and are looking for a player of that sort of quality and Luke Thompson would arguably fit that bill.”
The 26-year-old is contracted to the Bulldogs until the end of the 2023 season and has scored three tries in 25 games since joining the club in 2020.
