Hoppa was originally a right centre and Holland a left centre at Newcastle .Hard to train when you have had ankle surgery so don’t read to much into training positions just yet.Be clearer after Xmas when all on board and serious ball work starts.

Hoppa has never really performed well enough at right centre or at centre in general, his best performances through the years have always been on the wing or at fullback. Unfortunately we need him at centre for us and hopefully him on the right alongside Smith isn't what we will see next season.

We don't.

Hoppa at fullback, Montoya in centres alongside Holland, with Smith on one wing and Crichton/Meaney on the other.

Meaney needs to be fullback for mine.. He is a natural, and with his new frame, he will handle the defensive side a bit better..... it's the perfect time to build combinations among the guys who will be our future.. I mean, Hoppa is not exactly going to be our long-term fullback, one would think.

I agree in practice, but I feel Meaney has a way to go just yet. Besides Hoppa is shocking at centre... I think he was more to blame for defensive lapses than Montoya.

yeah he is... I mentioned in another thread that the players inside of Montoya were on the hard slide before the ball even got to the wing, leaving Montoya defending 2 to 3 on 1s regularly, and he already had his own issues to contend with  I would have hoppa on the wing personally

Agree with you 100% Meaney is our fullback. I would not put anyone else there we buy a specialist fullback for a change lets give him a go

I would have hoppa on the wing as well his not a good defender and if we have to have him in the team then wing for me. I cant see montoya holding a fg spot with the new guys coming in

Hence why we should play multlple NRL trials!
Sorry mr i but montoya has played like he has played in 100 trials now and continues to get worse. His trial period is over. Its off to 3rd grade for him or deano who i rate and back may as well start packing his bags imo. Im praying we still pick up a good centre. Maybe holland other centre. Id only pick one hooker and have hoppa on bench. He can play handy in alot of positions, even back row id bet. Which will force elliot rfm or martin back to reserve grade though. Coaches have some decisions to make.

He was flavour of the month when he first made his debut. His efforts at fielding kicks were great and he did plenty as a finisher. He's definitely got some talent. He just needs to get his confidence back and get some form. If he's not able to do both those things then he shouldn't be selected. But don't write him off yet. If our halves get their kicking game firing it will really allow Montoya to showcase one of the skills that people here were fapping about.

Maybe Montoya has something to offer but on last years efforts (in defence and attack) I can't see him getting picked for round one - except maybe on the wing for Crighton, but I doubt it. Any coach building a new team will try different combo's in off-season training, but Pay will know the side he wants by round one, with or without trials.

Surely we didn't sign Crichton to play ISP. I was initially a fan of Montoya his first half dozen or so first grade games but his defensive reads are terrible, he has the turning speed of a boat and his hit ups are weak. I'll be very disappointed if Pay doesn't go with Crichton and Smith.
