Canterbury great Terry Lamb has thrown his support behind Bulldogs caretaker coach Jim Dymock to take the job on permanently.

The NRL club is on the hunt for a replacement for the sacked Kevin Moore for 2012, with ex-assistant Dymock having assumed the reins since round 19.

Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg says he's received more than a dozen applications for the job, and previously confirmed he'd spoken with NSW State of Origin coach Ricky Stuart, but on Thursday said Dymock was in the "box seat".

Lamb, who won a premiership with Dymock in 1995, backed his former team-mate.

"Jimmy's done great in the last three weeks," Lamb told AAP.

"Jimmy's got the respect of the players, he's very casual, he makes some jokes now and again, he's very relaxed as a coach so I think he deserves a chance.

"I know he only had three or four years here (as a player).

"He loves this joint, he won a grand final with us in '95 and it bonds players, winning grand finals, and he knows what the bond's all about."

The Bulldogs want to give Dymock the rest of the season as an audition and Greenberg said a decision would be likely in around a month.

Four points outside the top eight, Canterbury are still a mathematical chance of making the finals.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs say they could be playing a couple of NRL home games each season in years to come at a redeveloped Belmore Sports Ground.

The Dogs will return to their spiritual home in November after $9 million was spent on training and administration facilities.

They will play a trial against the Sydney Roosters in February but are seeking more funding to upgrade spectator facilities.

"We are hoping in time we could play a couple of games a year here," said Greenberg, whose club has a deal with ANZ Stadium until 2015.

"There's no doubt that that's a real and genuine proposal."

Injured hooker and 2012 captaincy candidate Michael Ennis backed the idea.

"I thinkthat's where we've got to get to," he said.

"Whenever we play sides like Parramatta and the Tigers and St George I can understand why that would be played at ANZ.

"No disrespect to sides like Canberra and the Warriors, but when they travel I think that would be a perfect opportunity to play those games here."

Maybe Lamb and Ricky Stuart don't see eye to eye

After listening to him speak about his coaching tactics and goals at the Coach's Night, I would like to see him as our coach too. I like his priorities and the changes he's trying to instill in the players' attitudes and personal games. Unfortunately for him, it'll take more than the remaining 4 games for this to happen.

We don't need a casual and relaxed coach. We need an intense coach like Hasler and Bellamy. Someone who is ready to rip a players testicles off if he fcks up on and off the field.

I'm tired of keeping it in the family. 2004 was a long time ago let alone 1995. Moore is not the only one responsible for current blight. We need someone from the outside who is going to come in and kick some arse and shake up the joint. Otherwise we might aswell bring back Folkes.

No, he can be relaxed as long as he kicks butt when he needs to. I wouldn't piss JD off he would go off.

I was quite impressed with him last night and I would be happy to have him as head coach next year. I just don't think it would happen.

liking JD as a coach although some time under an experienced coach would pay him dividends.

JD for coach and Dean Pay as assistant (if we can pinch him from Melbourne).

That would be a great combo. These two formed the greatest back row combo, along with Jason Smith, in the club's history. They have a great understanding of each other and substantial knowledge of the game.

If we can somehow make the finals this year, I reckon we should give Dymock another year.

I believe we need to look outside the box though.

The way our club is at the moment I just don't want a rookie coach. Whoever we get must have proved himself before imo. Not bagging JD he could become a great coach.

Phil Gould was a rookie coach when Bullfrog picked him as coach and the dogs won the premiership.

The unfortunate thing with Dymock is he is coming into the picture after some very poor couple of years. And at a time were the club decided to keep it in house rather then search for the best options. So it will be harder for him to get the spot (even though he is one of the better options that are available).

Compared with when moore was as an assistant coach I think Dymocks credentials are better. He played for australia, played for NSW, played over 200 first grade games, won a grand final, was considered one of the most skillful forwards of his era (probably just behind Bradley Clyde). Compare that to Kevin Moore who played about 200 reserve grade games, a handful of first grade games, never made a rep team, never won a gf, didnt have the big game experiences, was a failure as a half. Probably made it in the game 10% based on his ability and 90% due to his name.
