What I meant was huge names though. Oates isn't one of the verified stars in the roster. Depending on how much the players buck up when there's consequences for taking a lax attitude to training, if it comes from say Walsh or one of the huge names leading the protest movement they'll need to weigh up if losing a star to scare the rest into compliance is worth it. I. Guessing they won't do that to save a coach untill they have a few years of under performing in succession.
If you believe the rumours we are losing Haas, Cobbo, Staggs & some others, I forget.

It must be true, it was posted on the site. Lol

I tend to be one to assume that until clubs actually confirm a signing or release, that it's not happening. I am on record scoffing at the idea that we were signing Montoya about 24 hours before the club confirmed it.

But I thought Walters would take the blame for the poor ladder finish this year a month before he was sacked. So I do get some guesses right. The club probably needed to place more emphasis on the players. IMO they lost interest in hard work through the year. There's not really much in the way of deficits in roster quality. But they're looking pretty weak willed.

Something happened in the pre season.

He lost the playing group before the season started.

All the shit from the sports experts sitting in front of their keyboards saying they made the gf last yr & sacked the coach are brain dead gobblers. (Linda Lovelace was an amateur , compared to them)

We overachieved & were blessed with not many injured players. We weren't as fit as the Panthers.

Perhaps Walters downfall was as simple as him recognising that fitness was behind them losing the GF and the players used mirrors more than stats to judge how fit they are. Could easily piss players off if they're looking at muscle definition as an indicator rather than performance over 80 minutes and the coach tries to inform them otherwise. But I agree that they stopped towing the line somewhere along the way.

Madge is slowing meeting players one on one (he had a group meeting)

First ones he is meeting are the one who were told to look elsewhere or who are unsigned & tell them if he wants them in the squad.

That's why Oates waited until now to announce he is retired. (I think he should have viewed his games to know)

He was told by Mark ‘Chopper’ Burgess, who worked with Walters in 2022, their fitness was shit & shock horror he was dismissed.

Burgess also worked with Bennett at the Broncos for years & I think he is at the Phins now.

Kev wanted yes men

Stars sometimes align in 2023 it did for the Broncos. Walsh had an untouchable season until the final 15 of the grand final where Penrith finally got at his weaknesses now all clubs target him. It was Reynolds last year as an elite halfback. Cobbo was focused for much of the season. Farnworth, Flegler and Capewell were still all there. Staggs was a top tier centre still is. Their forwards had the backdrop of Flegler, Carrigan and Haas all firing at once with capsule experience. All the stars aligned they didn’t quite get it.

Broncos and Roosters in 2024 had better teams on paper than Panthers and Storm. Broncos team was even better in 2023.

@Kaz didn’t the broncos make a big song & dance about keeping Mariner? I saw some broncos pages where he gets hammered not quite like Bulldogs players get hammered by our fans (even Kiraz wasn’t spared after the Manly semi) still hammered though.
