article in Big League, volume 90.
Giants '09
At just 18 years of age, Jamal Idris is an athlete with the world at his feet.
The multi-skilled youngster could just as easily try his hand at javelin or discus, but he'd much rather find himself in a one-on-one match-up with rugby leagues elite. Idris started last season in the SG Ball competition, but his giant frame was impossible to ignore and the dreadlocked wonder began skittling folk in the Toyota cup as he grew into his body, scoring 6 tries in the process. Soon enough the schoolboy found himself in first grade standuing toe-to-toe with a fired-up Sam Thaiday- and he held his own there too.
In his only 3 games of NRL football in 2008, Idris Scored his maiden try and averaged nearly 100 metres a game while playing in a struggling Bulldogs outfit. And with all of his growing seemingly done and dusted, Idris has emrged from his full pre-season not as a boy, but as a man. At a whopping 106 kg he is bigger then Israel Folau, but despite the bulk he has managed to maintain light feet and lightning-quick hands. Defensively, the Bulldogs junior has all the ingredients to develop into a brutal tackling centre - an aggressive nature, some serious muscle and an improving technique all spell trouble for his opponents.
Idris is not going to be given a free ride into the top squad, with one of the centre spots going to a new recruit, former Dragon Josh Morris, and the other entirely up for grabs. Idris, NRL regular Tim Winitana and experienced Fijian Daryl Millard are all contenders for the spot, but the 18-year-olds has the biggest future and could be given an early run. Make no mistake : Idris will make his mark on the NRL this year
