He is 23. Has the attributes to become a very good 5/8. Let the kid learn.. we can do much worse than Matty Burton.

I LIKE YOU GUS BUT FFS GET US A HB!

Even Munster or Lui would lok average in our side. Any top player is going to look average in our side at the moment. I don't see Critta or Kikau dominating like they did at the Panthers.

We are actually developing a team at the same time as developing some players but as time goes buy the overall standard should improve. A big part of that is our forwards. You can't win comps without a dominate pack especially props.

Thats the last part of the development we need to work on. Then we can make judgements on a players ability in a certain position. I have seen glimpses of Burtons potention at 5/8. He has one of the best kicking games and 5/8 is the ideal position for a good kicking game.

He has the size and speed for a good running game as seen in the centres. A bit like a Jack Wrighton type 5/8. But halves need forward momentum and space. Like Critta the more they get their hands on the ball the better. I think having two such players out in the centres seems to miss their potential.

At least for our side at the moment as we are not the Panthers or Souths who have good packs and the luxury of playing fullbacks and 5/8 in the centres. We are a different side, a developing side so we have to experiment a bit as well.

24 :grinning:

Be a good idea to get Matty down to training if Ciro see value in just ringing him...face to face drills be better for him?
Tho thought JT would be doing halves training?

What have you seen at training Klil with the halves?

Hutchison is playing OK at the moment. However, he doesn't have any creativity.
I think the experiment is over and Sexton needs to be bought in. Hotcho would be a fair 14.

Lol Shiet... What a week for Burto huh... Got raped on all types of media on his B'day week haha.

You probs dont want to hear this but not much if any at all. Its mostly constantly running through the structures and plays.

I guess getting a halves coach to run extras isnt a bad idea at all considering where we are at in the halves. I think we are that up shit creek in the department we may have to grab Chaddy fukn Townsend for atleast a year.

The kind of "centre" of attention he wouldn't be wanting :grinning:

The guy can play effectively. He was very good for a time there in 2022 as our 5/8. His kicking was more accurate and he was a threat and his combo with Fox was excellent.

If its only structures and plays then maybe more specialised training, help and advice is needed.

I had no problem with the way he played yesterday.. He was the only one that went away from the structures when he had an opportunity too.

Just think our talent at HB and Lock atm cant do the expansive job the structures demand.

I think Ciro needs to start Curran at Lock who is a much better ball runner than Salmon for a start. Salmon and Hutch are just TOO similar.

This is the clue to both Ciraldo and Demetriou coaching futures if it ever gets to a dire stage for both of them. Demetriou will throw their halfback under a bus and Ciraldo will move Magic to the centres. I think Magic is staying at 5/8 for as long as possible. If Ciraldo moves Magic to the centres and that doesn't work it's all over for Ciraldo as coach with us and Gould will begin the shopping process for Magic. There's more to lose than gain. Burton is our 5/8.

I laugh at the fullback talk. See the way Gutherson chased and hounded everything last night. I doubt Burton put his body on the line.

Burton's kicking game needs to be a shock weapon not a stock weapon. He showed very good signs last night.

Burton stays at 6.
Hutchinson, Taffe, Tracey, Sexton, Salmon, BBO are all lucky to be playing NRL if they are not playing NSW Cup. The rest have been NSW Cup players at Dogs or other clubs, none of them are exceptionally young either.
Hutchinson is either a utility at 14 or NSW Cup. Taffe is fullback or NSW Cup. Tracey is a centre or NSW Cup. Sexton is a slight upgrade on Hutchinson in attack but a degrade to the defence. Salmon is a second rower in NSW Cup or a utility at 14. BBO is a bit of a lucky dip, he might provide some spark or be a disaster.

This doesn't get talked about enough.

It's fair criticism to say, he needs to work on the draw and pass - but let's not pretend like it's a crazy strategy to give Kikau and Crichton early ball.
Lamb was once asked what made him such a good player. He said the players around him made him better. He would throw the ball quick to players outside of him like Farrar and Potter and just follow them or follow forwards for the offload scored a few tries after passing the ball to the likes of Dunn, Pay, Newton and a few others. Burton is absolutely lethal with all the skills and magic tricks up his sleeve the problem is he has too many tricks and resorts to the bomb since he kicks the ball higher & further than anyone else. Burton's strength is his running game he needs to back his running game or give early ball to the likes of Kikau, Preston, Critta and Kiraz and follow them for the offload. Kiraz has an awesome offload. Burton needs to one day venture to the right side of the posts.

Tough decision has to be made to move Burton to center and play Hutch and Sexton in the halves. Just watch how the good number sixes like Dearden and Dylan Brown are always threatening and putting the defenders in two minds by double pumping to throw a flat ball or go out wide.

My fear is if Magic goes to centre and he doesn't explode what happens? This pretty much finishes off Ciraldo as our coach and I could see Magic being shopped off by Gould where a list of suitors would chase him. Burton will exit without hesitation.

There was a game in 2022 vs Newcastle at their ground where Averillo had to come off with 13 to go due to a HIA. Potter threw Burton to fullback, JMK to 5/8 and Docker Clay hooker. Burton actually saved a try and did quite okay. Good short stop option during a game. But there were rumblings he wasn't happy with it. He won't take a positional change all that well.

Last year in successive games Fox and Kiraz go down. Ciraldo on both occasions had Reynolds on the bench. He had the chance on both occasions to bring Reynolds into 5/8 where he played most of his Bulldogs career and move Burton out to centre neither time it happened instead a back rower went there. Campbell Graham said thank you very much. I can't see Burton taking any positional change well. I can see his manager making phone calls about an exit. With a beverage of centres at the club I can see Gus agreeing to an exit.

CC allowing us to lose by 50 by not moving Burton to centre due to the injury crisis has to go down as one of the biggest instances of coaching malpractice and incompetence. I knew well before this he wasn’t capable but it should have been a lights on moment for the slow 1960s born on here

Geez if thats all it takes, let's do it!

Im thinking about the club here....

If we want to make sure this is the last year we miss out on finals on this run of 7 years without hope, lets do this quickly.

We have (rather stupidly) invested alot of our cap money on players outside our spine and are struggling badly. Time to change this.

Its a pickle of a situation for Gould because as we all know Gould trumpeted the fact that he would be topping up Burtons contract even before a ball was kicked in 2023 simply because gould felt the contract he was on was unders for his ability. Now since he gave Burton that top up his form has been unders and not barely worthy of his original pay cheque before the top up. Gould being a man of ego I think will be likely to see out Burton at 5/8 until the bitter end

Hard to understand that when Gus and CC went after Burton that they were under the impression
he is either a half or 5/8.
At Penrith he was one of the best centres in the comp.
We all thought at the time we were gaining a top notch centre not a potential half who had shown no form whatsover in the position.
When you fork out the big coin for an established 1st class centre it was what you expected to get.
All the best traing in the world will not make this weekends Golden Slipper winner win the Melbourne Cup

You do realise Burton played 6 his entire junior career and junior rep career and played 1 season at centre which happened to be in the NRL with Cleary and Luai ahead of him.
