Rocky fans bank on Kangaroos being punch-drunk
By Steve Mascord
November 30, 2004

US Rugby League officials are banking on hangovers and lack of sleep to help their side contain Australia in Philadelphia on Tuesday. The Kangaroos' tour concludes with their first game on US soil in half a century, when they take on the Tomahawks on astroturf three days after flogging Great Britain.

Australia were due to arrive in New York late on Monday, travel by bus to Philadelphia and play the next night - probably without a training session.

"We are taking into account the fact it has been a long, hard year for the Aussie players," said USRL president David Niu.

"They will come here feeling a bit tired, a bit let down and maybe looking for a break.

"This is the wrong country to tell people that you're not going to do any good. You might as well pack up and go home. But I've been realistic and told people this is like a college team taking on a pro side - it won't be easy.

"They love an underdog here. This is Philadelphia, where Rocky was set."

The USA forget that Aussies are the best drinkers in the world. Hangovers don't bother us :D

They actually play better with hangovers. Ha ha. The Americans should get to the game and sit back and enjoy .

Guys, don't be so harsh - our game could have nothing better happen to it than for it to take off in the US - any ways, what I'm saying is, at least they're having a go - I checked out the site when the Kennel was down and it would probably shock most of you to hear that our own Bulldogs supports a team - Glen Mills Bulls over there. And this David Niu person plays for them as well. I'd rather take that than what GB did - running around saying how they are going to be the best in world after then beat Australia at the weekend - which they were convinced they would!

No that was put up here earlier in the year but with them playing the Coogee Dolphins (from the Roosters local comp) in the lead-up match I would have to put my support behind the Americans there ;)

In late breaking news it has been announced the Australian team have agreed to the US Tomahawks playing in NFL styled shoulder pads and helmets. It is thought even with this advantage the US team will last roughly 10 minutes before the Aussies run riot over them :D

I can definitely see the humour in it - but I try my hardest not to knock anyone who is having a fair dinkum go at something. They shouldn't play the Kangaroos - that's really just a joke, but a team more on their level, I will certainly be going for the US when they play anything assosiated with the Rooters - that's as half would say - fo sho. :p

IF the tomawanks do happen to win are they going to claim themselves as "world champions" like they do with every other sport. Well they are world champions............but not at sports ;)

Everyone is saying how great this is goin to be for International Rugby League and i agree with them to a certain extent...

but if the aussies win by like 70...then i dont think it would have done International rugby league any favours...

They will fix it, just like they did with France and how the Aussies "lost" to England and then came back and demolished them.

I agree, I want total destruction of the US! Show them how football is really played!.

BTW, the article says that they will play on astro turf, wont that burn the players when they get tackled and such?

LOL I said the same thing about the cricket team! "Double centuries from Hayden and Gilly would be fun to watch" but evil Ponting sent them into bat first :(

It will most certainly be great for the game - that's why they should play someone on their level imo - that way it would work out great - win lose or draw! There are over 300 million ppl in the US - you get them into it and almost every game could potentially be a sell out!
