I think it’s fair. He’s had a better roster to work with compared to the last few years. And we’re running dead last. With Pay as coach he always had us in games. We rarely got flogged. This year we’re been flogged numerous times. Had 50 put on us twice FFS rock bottom was losing 66-0.

Dufty, JAC, Naden, Burton, Thompson, TPJ - with these attacking players, we should be scoring 20+ points against the likes of Titans, St Merge, Tigers, Warriors, Broncos, Cowboys, Sharks - defence wise, who knows

Top tier teams - we are no chance

No one knows what the fixture list is for next season. If we get Strom twice plus Chooks, Eagles, Manly, and Souffs all in the first 8 weeks, it is very different to having Cows twice, plus Merge, Wests, Warriors, and Bonks. If Burton does an ACL in training a week before round 1 everything changes. There is so much to happen between now and round 9 next season.

No one who knows what they are doing puts down an ultimatum like that, you risk having to retract and looking like a goose. When Gus fired coaches it surprised everyone because he evaluates as he goes along. Also note that he had someone lined up to take the job too.

Barrett left a position with a contender to come and sort out a truck wreck. I’d give him next season and if we are in the battle for a spoon again then I’d help him pack his stuff. But 8 weeks is hard to perform with what is it? 11 players leaving? About 7-8 coming in?

This isn’t an established team. They have had 4-5 coaches in the past 3-4 seasons (including caretakers). They pretty much have 2 wooden spoons in a row (only avoiding last year on for and against) and only now are able to recruit with an aim of a top 8 spot (but still have handicapped contracts like Elliot, cotric, Jackson, Waddell). I think anything above 10th is an improvement. Anything below 10th is a sacking. We aren’t on the storms, roosters, eels, Souths, manly, penrith level. To be honest raiders are a better squad too. We are in the mix with Newcastle, sharks. Should be better then cowboys, titans, warriors, but we lack a elite spine to compete with the heavyweights.

Top 8 will be awesome, top 10 is more or less what’s expected, bottom 3 isn’t good enough.

In reality we lack another decent bench prop, we lack quality back rowers (not sure if TPJ is slotted out wide or in the middle). If RFM can stay on the field and be consistent (no shirt grabbing, no dumb offloads, no turn overs) then we do have some quality in the back row, but if Waddell is a mainstay we are fucked). We lack a halfback and a hooker. We will never be a realistic contender for the title without solidifying those positions. But with our cap stretched more then a street workers box at the end of a 10hr fully booked day, we do need to reset our roster again (unfortunately) before we wont be able to compete with a fully fit roosters, storm, manly, panthers.

In all honesty too much money is held up in players that aren’t vital for our success (cotric, Jackson, thompson, Waddell, Elliot, Flanagan, even addo Carr).

Probably best bang for the buck we have are Vaughan, Ava, burton, (possibly dufty if he is on a small contract). Every other player is on a sizeable contract, but their return is not of value for the club.

8 games won’t prove much. But I will fully support the club sacking Barrett if by the end of 22 we are not in the mix for an 8th spot with 2-3 games left. Anything above that is an overachievement. If we are still where we are then it is a gross underachievement and I am sure that will not be accepted by the board and the club.
You will find the 8 weeks shows a trend in a coaches consistency. You have to also remember he’s had all this year to work out some team structure and who and what works and who and what doesn’t, he will have a whole (2nd) off season too. A few fans can keep saying he needs the right players around him. Well coaches like Wayne Bennett have proven you can find some things that work and take chances when they don’t. A good coach in the Nrl needs to change each week, dependant on a whole bunch of elements. The sad thing for us as fans, there hasn’t been much change week to week to say things are on the improve. The other thing is Gus will only make a move on anything like this scenario (next year some time) if he has someone to come to replace him. He did it a few times at the Panthers - so Gus will do it if it’s needed.

I think if we're already talking about the draw and injuries and suspensions we're already in trouble. These excuses literally apply to every team.

Talking specifically about pinning everything on the first 8 weeks.

Geez, Barrett's gonna have to change his ways & the players will have to train with each other instead of over zoom!

Stupid fucking article tbh.

Think it's clear as hell that he's being backed by the board, but obviously that faith needs to be returned with results and performances.

We've been dire this year, but satisfied to wait and see what we do with a better squad. 8 games in is a fair enough yard stick imo.

Think he'll do alright Barrett
