Gold Coast Titans turn to England as Brandon Smith trail turns cold

Gold Coast are ready to exit the race for Brandon Smith and turn their attention to landing England rake Daryl Clark for next season after the Melbourne No 9 indicated he was ready to honour the final year of his deal at the Storm.
Clark, a former Super League Man of Steel, is under contract at Warrington but it is believed he has been given permission to sound out clubs about a switch to the NRL.

The Titans have made no secret of their desire to land a hooker, having made Smith their No 1 priority. However, it appears Clark is the more realistic target as Smith prepares to remain in Melbourne.

The Weekend Australian was told that the Titans were ready to table an offer to Clark, a player coach Justin Holbrook knows well from his time in Super League.

Clark has made no secret of his desire to try his hand in the NRL. Canterbury have also expressed an interest in the 28-year-old as they seek to address their issues in the No 9 jersey

They have also actively pursued Smith, as has Brisbane. Clark now appears the more realistic option and the Gold Coast look to have stolen a march on their rivals as they attempt to address one of the few shortcomings in their forward pack.

The Storm, meanwhile, look set to pull off a coup if they can convince Smith to stay. The New Zealand No 9 has started at hooker over the opening three rounds of the season for Melbourne while Harry Grant recovers from injury.

Grant is another fortnight or more from returning, meaning Smith is guaranteed to remain at No 9 for the foreseeable future. He is expected to play lock or from the interchange bench when Grant returns.

This is the first we've heard in a while about Clark wanting to come over. It makes sense that Holbrook would be keen but we need to make a serious run at Clark because he'd instantly become a top five hooker in the NRL. He's a better player than Hodgson and lightning quick.

The Gold Coast Titans have reportedly tabled an offer for Warrington star Daryl Clark.

The Australian’s Brent Read revealed that the Titans’ interest in Melbourne’s Brandon Smith has ended so Warrington Wolves’ player Daryl Clark is now the main potential target.

Read added that the Titans had tabled an offer to Clark with the Bulldogs also sniffing around.

Clark has played 227 games in the Super League with 65 tries and has previously spoke of wanting to test himself in the NRL.

“I’m told now Brandon Smith has made the decision to stay in Melbourne next year,” Read said.

“He won’t be leaving at the end of the year and the Gold Coast have actually moved on. They have made an offer to a guy called Daryl Clark, a former Man of Steel in the Super League in England.

He’s an England hooker for Warrington. He’s behind Josh Hodgson in the pecking order for England. The Gold Coast, I’m told, have tabled an offer for Daryl Clark next season. I’m told they will release him to leave without a transfer fee.

“They hope to get someone to fill that vacancy. Canterbury are also interested.”

The Titans and Holbrook being interested and potentially making an offer is worrying. You'd think Holbrook's relationships in the UK would give them the upper hand. Clark playing with that Titans pack would be insane.

Crazily enough, he's coming off the bench for Warrington in their first game of the season which is just bizarre.

Alot of teams in the SL have done this in the opening round, their way of utilising the best hooker when players are tired in a more open attacking competition because they have the 6 again rule as well

He ended up getting a try. I watched a bit of it and when he was on he looked dangerous. Didn't see the 2nd half though. It was a dumb move by Steve Price (ex Dragons coach) to bench your best player. The guy that started for him did nothing and they ended up losing to Castleford.
