Foran is no lesser or greater risk than he was 3 years ago when he signed a 3 year contract with us. At the time many reckoned he wouldn't last 3 years, and a couple of times, especially late last year when he did his shoulder, many called for a medical retirement. The same is basically true if he signs for another 3 years. There is a very high chance he will miss at least 25% of games, a high chance he will miss 50% of games, and a moderate chance he will have to medically retire in that time.
There are two main differences to signing him on a 3 year deal the second time around.
1 - It would be for far less. Offer him 3 years on $300k a season.
2 - Unlike 3 years ago we now have an up and coming 5/8 who is absolutely ready to be understudy; Avo. The key to managing the injury concerns of any player involve having a backup plan. We didn't have one three years ago. Now we have Avo, he has now got a taste of first grade, we can see what he can do and what he needs more work on. Seems to me to have a bit of similarity to the Ricky Stuart/Brent Sherwin scenario of the late 90s.
But all this is theoretical. I wonder if the reality is that Barrett simply doesn't want him. As a player I'm pretty sure it helps to feel wanted, and if Foran still hasn't gotten a call and if it is true that he is asking for three years (remember no official confirmation of this), maybe all it is really about is Foran trying to figure out if he is really wanted or not.
