Shane Flanagan’s aggressive and public pursuit of the Canterbury coaching job will be a significant contributing factor in him missing out on the gig.
Flanagan has almost certainly talked himself out of the Bulldogs job and, inadvertently, placed an even bigger target on the back of his under-pressure son Kyle. This is despite members of the Canterbury board thinking favourably of him.
Flanagan is an outstanding coach, but comments in a podcast for Fox Sports during the week, which were perceived as criticism of the Bulldogs’ management of his son, are set to cost him.
What’s happened over the last 12 or 18 months hasn’t been great for Kyle,” Flanagan said in the podcast. “And that’s criticising no one, it’s just the circumstances that he was in. He didn’t play half of last year and didn’t get the start this year and he lost a lot of his confidence.
“He’s a lot better football player than he’s shown now. He’s got some holes in his game without a doubt that he needs to work hard on – I’m just not sure he’s getting that at training at the moment.”
Flanagan snr says he was not aware of an offer that was made to the agent he shares with Kyle, Wayne Beavis, of a swap deal with Dragon Jayden Sullivan. It’s a potential move that Flanagan would have levels of involvement in: firstly, as Kyle’s dad and, secondly, as the recruitment head of the Dragons.
Under the proposed deal, Shane had the chance to bring Kyle to the Dragons and guide him in a system that he is a part of, but the swap didn’t happen.
The proposed deal may have remained quiet, but Flanagan snr’s criticism of the way his son was being coached at the Bulldogs changed that. Shane put Kyle in the firing line, and now the Bulldogs are not happy. They want to know about how well Sullivan is being coached: he is a half who is occasionally being used off the bench as a hooker.
Flanagan did not want to discuss his podcast comments but maintains he has no issue with the coaching Kyle received at Canterbury and can’t understand the reaction to what he said.
Flanagan said the swap deal was not on his radar, nor will it be. While not wanting to be quoted, the message was clear that the Dragons have no desire to let Sullivan go.
It looks very likely that Shane, and maybe even Kyle, will need to revive their careers away from Belmore.
