I still want to look elsewhere. Fogarty could be worthwhile and would not command huge $. We’d have two excellent kickers on both sides of the field then and Fogarty is a decent organiser.

I’ve always had questions over Sexton since he debuted for Titans. He’s never been consistently good. The fact he’s still unsigned is telling. Newcastle didn’t go near him if the lack of media says anything.

We’ll either stick with him for another year while waiting for Woods or buy someone else.

I'd love to know everyone's thoughts on Sexton's future. Our current 7, unsigned since November 1, what's playing out here?

Is he waiting for better $$$, are we stalling because of the emergence of Woods?

If his kicks had an extra 7m on them we would resign him for a million as that’s the only metric that matters

Then Woods has to double kill it.

If you want to keep your position playing for the Bulldogs then you have to earn it.

Team Work
The problem is we need to make a decision on Sexton very soon. Otherwise what if Woods doesn’t work out? Then we are stuffed because there are not many quality halfbacks available and it will be worse when the new teams enter the conp

Fans still skimming over the fact that we could barely buy a win until he came into the side last season.
He was replacing Hutchinson so very low base line. No doubt he is currently the best 7 available at the club but wouldn’t be in the top 1/2 dozen halves in the comp.
He has been in the nrl for 5 years and approaching his mid twenties so fair to say he has reached his ceiling.
Quality halves are the difference between winning a premiership and being pretenders. He is not a premiership winning half.

Have the same energy for Burton.

Ok so we're back to the Burton is a centre foolishness. A quality organising 7 beside Burton would be a top shelf combination. Seems many on here are blind to the qualities he brings to the table as a running half. May as well get used to it because it's unlikely he'll be going anywhere soon. I couldn't be as confident in saying that about Sexton.

Certainly not getting value for $’s in Burtons case. Can maybe get away with carrying one underperforming but not both.
Purely talking value. Burtons 24, played SOO, his long kicks mean we start our defensive sets well into the opposition half, his defence is acceptable and he can run the ball. He's an average, at best, playmaker and supposed to be on around $800k. So value wise, compared to the Dylan Thomas deal, he is value. Other thing is Burton was a strategic buy to get others (Kiks, Crichton) on board. Think we got what we paid for.

Toby has a good attitude and is slowly improving. If there is not a marquee half available then we have little choice but to resign him. Our young guys are not ready.
It's also easy to forget that prior to last year, we were averaging something like 14 points a game.. That's generally around about the score oppositions want to keep you to. Ofc it wasn't all Toby, but we definitely look more like a proper football team with him in it.

I would be putting a 2 year extension on the table on a deal similar to what he is on now. Which I don’t believe is very much.

Not that I agree with clauses in contracts generally.

but if there is a mutual option on year 2 that would look after the player and club should he fall down the order in preference.

I think he is good enough without being a superstar to be snapped up by someone else soon. There isn’t many 7’s out there. However I think he is enjoying his time at the dogs and would sign a deal like this if we wanted to keep him.

I do feel if we were going to keep him he would already be signed. I feel we are all in on the youth coming through.

I'd imagine Gus is keeping his powder dry with regard to re-signing Toby Sexy. If no improvement on last year maybe a no from Gus. His manager is likely looking for a substantial upgrade which is probably not warranted yet. If Gus can get him on the same deal I'd be happy with that for a couple of years.

From what I can see, there's not top tier 7 available. Ma as well stick with Sexton for some continuity and develop the youngsters.

Swapping him for a similar-tier half might have more downsides than upsides.

It's been so hard for the dogs, and most other sides, to click with their halves. We win more games than loose with Sexton at 7.

$750k per year for a rep player and five eighth isn’t value? Lol fmd.
We have got great value for our halves paring, they are punching above their weight. Some on here don't appreciate rebuilding is difficult the half back academy is bringing on the future, I guess we want to go up the table and the huge jump last year thrusts us into new territory for improvement. But a top 4 spot comparisons to the Broncs, Panthers, Manly and Melbourne is big ask. I don't mind Sexy he is improving, Ive defended Burton been critical sometimes but in fairness he is quality player. Our next assignment to go top 4 well this club has a history of some absolute champion halfbacks, these guys are playing for a premium Club with a big supporter base demanding wins. I hope these guys can continue to lift but I think CC and Gus will show some ruthlesness in securing us a GF sooner than later.
