The Bulldogs have secured one of the hottest prospects across the NRL and AFL, beating the Swans to rising star Mitchell Woods. Woods is contracted to the Bulldogs for next year and in the last few days he and his family have committed to a long-term deal with club.

Woods, a rising halfback star, is considered one of, if not the, hottest young players in league and AFL.

He was being courted by both codes, with the Bulldogs and Swans in a civilised battle for his services. Canterbury coach Cameron Ciraldo was an obvious attraction for Woods and no less a judge than Brad Fittler picked Woods in his emerging Blues squad a year ahead of previous plans such is his talent.

Furthermore, Bulldogs GM Phil Gould took a personal interest in a player the Dogs hope can be one they build a team around in years to come, much like Penrith have done with Nathan Cleary. Woods will be the key figure in the halfback academy that the Dogs are running – a similar academy set up by Gould at Penrith resulted in the development of Cleary and Jarome Luai.

We are not comparing Woods to Cleary, but the Dogs are excited about his prospects.

“Mitchell Woods is one of the most extraordinary young talents you can ever imagine,” Gould said.

In recent years he has played rugby, AFL and rugby league, all at the highest levels of school sport and elite junior academies in these respective sports, all at the same time. There is no doubt he has a future in any one of these sports. We actually went and met with the Sydney Swans development staff to discuss his future. We both agreed he could make it in either code, but the time had come for him to specialise in one game.

“Both the Swans and Bulldogs told Mitchell we would support him no matter which sport he chose as his career, but we both agreed he needed to make that decision now, because his training for the respective codes was about to become very specialised and very different.

“Obviously the Bulldogs are grateful Mitchell has chosen to pursue a career in professional rugby league with our club. It’s wonderful for our club, but also great for the game of rugby league. We also know the guys at the Swans will be cheering for him.

“Mitchell was the captain of our Harold Matthews premiership-winning team this season. He was also the player of the year. He’s a hard-working and extremely dedicated young man. It’s exciting to think we will be a part of his development as a professional footballer. We are lucky to have Mitchell in our club.”

Smh weidler. Amazing work from the club. At one point everyone thought he was 100% gone

That's great news. Hopefully he keeps developing because he is extremely talented and could be anything. Hopefully there's not too much pressure or expectations put on him as he's still young but it's great work by the club to re-sign him for a few more years and fend off interest from the Swans and other NRL clubs..

People can hammer Gus all they want but there's no doubt our lower grades and junior talent through development, scouting and retention is in better shape than it has been in years...

Excellent news…. Now for the love of god, let’s make sure this talent develops his game FULLY in Flegg/Cup before hitting first grade!

We’d seen a similar story on Alamoti years ago, only to fail when thrown into 1st grade and subsequently moved on at 19 because clearly he wasn’t ready!

By the way I love how there are 25 threads about RFM who is barely worth discussing, yet almost no discussion about re-signing one of the best junior talents in the code.

Some people would rather obsess over the same shit to suit their agenda than to acknowledge the good things that are happening at the club too..

Fantastic news.
Obviously there is no guarantee this kid will make it as a star in NRL.
But it's so good to have some of the best young kids in our development system.
Looks like Gus is doing a great job.

Future looking bright

There was more rfm news today. Weidler saying Gould met another player there but the photographer was only there for RFM..
Look out for tomorrow's @djdeep4172 megamix

True.
I agree Alamoti was thrown in a little early.
That wasn't the problem.
The problem was, he is an outside back.
Playing in a team with no controlling halves or dominant forward pack.
Outside backs can't do anything without dominant forwards giving halves time and space to give outside backs good ball.
It's really that simple.

The best think for Alamoti right now was to go to the panthers..

This aged well... I'm sure Flanagun will be death riding Woods now and somehow spin this into a negative.
The spin will likely be that Gus is only good at junior systems and not NRL - leaving aside the fact that you get your juniors right and inevitably several of them end up in the NRL - something the Bulldogs lost their way on for almost a decade but we see is changing.

Yeah, you've gotta be excited about this. Born and bred, not bought

You forgot the "but Alamoti, BBO, Oloapu etc were hyped but were ruined and treated poorly by the club" argument which they'll use.. If only their responses weren't so predictable...

It's a credit to the talent of Woods that he played for Australia in juniors for League and Rugby, was an under 16's all-Australian in AFL and was considered a potential top 5 draft pick for the AFL..

He's still only 17 so now that he can focus solely on League and the Bulldogs, hopefully we can see him develop through the grades in the next year or two..
