Wally Lewis believes his nephew, Lachlan, has the right ‘talent and temperament’ to help Canterbury Bulldogs out of the hole they’re in provided the struggling club shows him plenty of support during their rebuilding process.

Lachlan, 21, has been named to make his debut at five-eighth for the Bulldogs against Newcastle on Saturday night, at the end of a week which has seen high profile recruit Aaron Woods become the latest star behind fullback Moses Mbye to part company with the 15thplaced club.

Wally has taken a backseat to Lachlan’s development but heaped praise on both his parents (Wally’s brother Scott is Lachlan’s father), and the coaches he's had throughout his career, for getting him to this point in time.

“He’s worked hard, plenty of years have gone into it and everyone is happy for him,” Wally said.

“He’s done well for himself and certainly deserves the spot.

“He’s a big tall, rangy kid. He’s nearly (187cm) which is pretty big for a halfback/five-eighth.

“I’m going to be a very interested uncle watching on and very hopeful that he’s going to be able to produce his best.”

Lachlan will be the latest playmaker tried by rookie coach Dean Pay at Belmore this season, with star half Kieran Foran out for the year with a toe injury while other options have included Jeremy Marshall-King, Fa’amanu Brown and Matt Frawley.

Wally said he had been surprised by the Bulldogs’ fall from grace this season but he was hopeful their reputation as the ‘family club’ would be beneficial for Lachlan in his first grade journey. Lachlan has impressed in the Intrust Super Championship, helping the Dogs to the finals in 2017.

“It’s been a very tough year for Canterbury, I’ve never seen a season like this at the Bulldogs and the rebuilding process has got to take place and they’ve got to try and get rid of the poor form, the bad performances that they’ve had and regain a little bit of confidence,” Wally said.

“There’s no doubt it’s been a dream of his life and he’s wanted this day to arrive.

“He’s certainly got the talent and the temperament to take the next step and do the right thing.

“Every kid goes through this when they come along to making their debut. It’s first day at the office in the big time and there’s a bit of an old saying, it’s put up or shut up, but especially when it’s a relative you’re always very hopeful that things are going to go well.

“He seems to have achieved plenty in his progression through as a junior and then coming through to his climb to the NRL. Hopefully everything will go OK for him. The one thing that Canterbury have always had is a close family background and they’ll provide plenty of support for him.”

The King Wally Lewis has given his stamp of approval. Win Lose or draw we should afford Lachlan the same opportunities given to Frawley and JMK. We shouldn't be quick to judge him, so put away the hangman's noose guys. He's a talented kid and given time he could develop into a great player for us.

I agree. However well or poorly Lewis performs, just give him time and let's not jump to conclusions about how great or rubbish he is. As a fan base we have to be patient and supportive of these young kids and hope they come out the other side.

If they have one good game, let's not turn them into our saviour and hammer them a few weeks later when they struggle like we've done to countless other players. And if they have a poor game, let's not write them off completely too early as it takes time to find your feet in first grade, especially when joining a sinking ship.

I love the way this young man plays the game. He is raw but he has such a commitment to the game and the team. Can hit hard in defence. Let's give him a chance to prove himself in the top grade...don't crucify him after one performance...

Good luck to him, hopefully he will be part of our rebuilding as all indications are this will be the case.

Well I have to agree with Wally here..
And he is also a very good organising player and can get the team around the park! Which is what is needed right now..

He deserves this as much as anyone and if we all give him more than a few games before blasting him I’m sure you will see a lot of improvement!! I like the kid an always have.

Good luck to Him.

Yeah I know..:upset:.
I have seen him play several times this year and he does okay considering he was being played in the centres. Never shirked his defensive responsibility and at least he has a kicking game quite often finding open spaces. Intrust have pretty extensive stats on their games, worth a look...

Lachy will at least go hunting for the ball and is always 100% competitive, even if the game seems done.

I don't expect him to shy to the occassion, but rather rise to it.

Hope he has a blinder.

Learn to tackle, Learn to not race out of the line, and Learn to stay involved in the game for 80 minutes and go looking for the ball.

In all honesty I can't see Cleeland ever being anything but a NSW Cup player. He's 27 and yet to debut... why pick him over someone like Adam Douehi or Cogger who are young!?!
