I'm trying to buy a new mower, and have NO idea what to get...

With a budget of around $850... there is lots of choice but fuck all reviews.

We have a large lawn with buffalo grass (BOOOO!!!!)...

The Victa Corvette 400 seems most likely, but I can be easily swayed...

Any advice

Have a Ryobi cordless 36V battery powered 46cm and love it. Much lighter than petrol which is great for a multi tiered backyard. No messing round and starts first time every time.

You'll get 45 min on a full battery. Because the battery is relatively expensive, bought the corresponding 36V trimmer which also comes with the same battery. Having both easily gets me through a 550m block with plenty of spare battery power.

Our petrol mower is dying so was thinking about getting an Ozito power mower. I have an 18v Ozito line trimmer and it's great.

As someone who has 6 immediate neighbours that are all retired and lawn obsessed I can't recommend electric hedge trimmers blowers line trimmers mowers and all that much more silent shit enough.

100% go battery operated!

Makita make some awesome battery mowers, some self propelled, line trimmers & blowers!
No more oil, no more petrol

I actually have the 54v DeWalt Outdoor Mower, Line Trimmer & Blower which are bloody powerful, but a little heavy.
If I had it to buy it all over again, I would go Makita.

Yeah I jumped on Ryobi as there wasn't a lot of choices at the time but much more of a range now. Would definitely have considered the Ozito option if I was buying now.

Do they have a 36V option? Great when the grass is a little long.

Go on YouTube. I chose i lawn mower I was interested in and watched someone even now a lawn with it. You get to see how well it cuts, sucks up leaves and how loud the engine is. I bought a Ryobi with a Subaru engine and I am happy. But don’t take my word for it, see if you can a video of some, then you won’t feel like your guessing if it’s any good. Good Luck.

Why would you buy a petrol mower for a suburban backyard in 2022?

My caveat: don't go too cheap if your yard is a bit on the tough or large side. Tbh, I don't think the Bunnings home brand (ozito) would cut it in the long run. My mother has a ozoto lime trimmer and last weekend it took 2.5 charges to finish the job (she has a lot of edges).

I've started making all of my gardening tools Ryobi so can interchange the batteries.

With your budget. Dont go to bunnings.
Go to a proper mower shop.
Youll get a better quality machine and the guys will actually have an idea about mowers.

Buy a second hand ride on, one hand on the steering wheel the other holding a beer, and when you run out drive it to the bottle shop.
