STAR Broncos fullback Karmichael Hunt has priced himself out of the NRL, with even the cashed-up Sydney Roosters unable to get near his asking price of almost $500,000 a year.
Hunt has told the Broncos he will never play against them, and even if his overseas options fall through it is unlikely he would get the chance.
The Roosters were yesterday linked with a deal that would supposedly see them release Kiwi international Setaimata Sa and veteran fullback Anthony Minichiello in an effort to lure Hunt to Bondi.
But Roosters recruitment kingpin Peter O'Sullivan dismissed the suggestion as "absolute crap".
Asked if the Roosters would be interested in Hunt, O'Sullivan said: "We would love to have a player of Karmichael Hunt's ability at our club but the simple fact is we can't afford him. He is a champion but at the money he is looking for it is doubtful any one in the NRL could afford him.
"There is simply no chance (of a deal like that happening). Setaimata Sa will be going nowhere. He is part of the club's long-term plans.
"We have just re-signed him for three years, he is a champion kid and we think the world of him.
"It is common knowledge that Mini is off contract. Unfortunately he has had the injury setback, so we aren't in a rush to make any decisions there, we will make those in due course."
The Broncos last week withdrew a three-year $1.25 million offer to Hunt. Broncos football manager Peter Nolan said any interest from NRL rivals would have no bearing on any fresh offer the club might make to their star custodian.
"As we have said all along we would love Karmichael to stay," Nolan said.
"But we had an offer on the table which we withdrew when agreement could not be reached and if Karmichael comes back to us he is aware one or two things that were part of the original deal will not be there any more."
Hunt has been linked to rugby union deals in both Japan and France. The Courier-Mail understands English Super League powerhouse Wigan have also tabled a lucrative three-year deal to the 22-year-old, but Hunt has indicated if he stays in league he would prefer to play in Australia.
The Roosters have meanwhile distanced themselves from a deal with former Raiders bad boy Todd Carney. Banished to bush football with the Atherton Roosters, Carney had been linked to a move to Sydney when his NRL exile ends
