Okey dokey - have fun with this.

Start with $50.
I spend $20 - leaves me $30 left
I spend $15 - leaves me $15 left
I spend $9 - leaves me $6 left
I spend $6 - and I'm broke.

Yet $30 + $15 + $6 is $51.

So where did the other $1 come from?

You don’t add the resulting numbers.. you add up the ones you minus from the $50..ie

$20 + $15 + $9 + $6 is $50

I've seen this one in the past. It's one of the mathematical fallacies, or mathematical errors that can be made when you attempt to calculate the wrong thing. I won't explain it but it's the cause of many issues in both finance and programming.

Its the old one where three guys have a meal that comes to $25, and they all chuck in a tenner and get a dollar change each or something like that.

quick explanation just look at which levels each glass pours to the other ones and 7 gets poured and filled the quickest as it’s from the lowest points of other glasses

Why not?

The deduction is what needs to be added back not the result of the subtraction.

Below shows the method..

50-20 = 30

30-15 = 15

15- 9 =6

6-6 = 0

As such you add the deduction back ie.

0 + 6 = 6
6 + 9 = 15
15 + 15 = 30
30 + 20 = $50
