Small update today. As everyone knows no games at ANZ - this focuses on the upcoming renovation, which is moving forward, but hard to judge whether it has been delayed by the Rona or not...

As business starts to re-open and our lives slowly return to normal, Members will no doubt be aware that the ARL Commission has confirmed the NRL season will re-commence on 28 May.

The NRL will be the first of the football codes to resume after the COVID-19 public health crisis, however in line with current NSW Public Health orders, no fans will be able to attend matches for now.

The NRL has released its draw for the rest of the 2020 season, and Members should note that no NRL matches will be played at ANZ Stadium between now and 30 June. This means there will be no events between now and the scheduled closure of the Stadium.

This is in line with the pending redevelopment of the Stadium, with the appointment of the Head Contractor for the redevelopment now imminent.

Once the contractor has been appointed, Infrastructure NSW (INSW), on behalf of Government, will undertake the process to finalise the contract, which will involve a 12-week Early Contractor Engagement (ECI) process, where the final design of the Stadium and the construction timetable will be finalised.

In coming weeks we expect to receive further details regarding the redevelopment, and as soon as this information is to hand we will provide further, more detailed information to Members regarding the redevelopment and the issues relevant to Members, including the process for Members to provide input into the final design of Member facilities.

As a valued Stadium Member, you can be sure we will keep you up to date on the redevelopment and other news relating to your Membership.

Premier abandons $810 million ANZ Stadium rebuild

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has abandoned the promised $810 million rebuild of Sydney’s Olympic stadium at Homebush, a victim of the state’s COVID-19 financial disaster.

Instead the NSW government has announced a new $3 billion fund for job-creating projects across the state to generate an extra 20,000 positions.

The promised $1.1 billion Powerhouse Museum move to Parramatta will still be delivered, but ANZ Stadium will remain untouched.

ANZ was to be converted into a 70,000-seat state-of-the-art venue with a rectangular playing field to host Sydney’s showpiece major events including State of Origin, NRL grand finals, international sporting events and rock concerts.

The $3 billion infrastructure and job fund will be used for smaller, shovel-ready projects “touching every corner of the state”, according to the government.

The Premier said the moves would fire up the economy, with $100 billion now being invested in the state’s infrastructure.

“This guaranteed pipeline of $100 billion will be our best chance of supporting the hundreds of thousands of people who have already lost their jobs in NSW,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We are now not only guaranteeing our infrastructure pipeline, we will be looking for opportunities to fast-track projects to provide jobs as early as we can.”

The government said the ANZ Stadium rebuild was originally a sensible project backed by the people of NSW at last year’s election, but was abandoned because of the current health and economic climate.

The Powerhouse Museum relocation will create more than 1100 construction jobs in Western Sydney, 2400 indirect jobs and keep hundreds employed once it opens.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the fast-tracking of projects would support jobs across NSW and the government was in the process of identifying them.

“The communities of NSW have been through an incredibly tough period with continued drought, horrific bushfires and now COVID-19 and the best path to recovery is creating jobs,” Mr Barilaro said.

“An unprecedented crisis calls for an unprecedented recovery and redirecting funding from Stadium Australia to job-creating infrastructure builds is the right thing to do for the people of NSW.”

The ANZ Stadium decision leaves Sydney without a major event venue to match Perth’s new Optus Stadium, Adelaide Oval or Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Knew this was coming ... Maybe just maybe if Vlandys was here earlier then roosters getting their new stadium through corruption wouldnt have happened ... ANZ was always the most logical option as it serves bigger live events and concerts and is more practical to get in and out of... The whole thing stinks.

That’s a shame. I haven’t heard one person say they see the benefit of the PH Museum move and I’m guessing it will simply allow the Government to sell the land at Ultimo for squillions to a developer and 500 apartments will be built there just like at Harold Park.

Guess this also means the Dogs will not move to Bankwest and play out of ANZ as soon as it’s a cleared venue post Rona.

Why don't they pour a spare 100 million in Belmore in lieu of ANZ to kick start the economy.

Until the club is averaging more then 30k they should be playing out of Bankwest. ANZ always has been and always will be rubbish for small crowds.

Too many reasons mate - local politics, land ownership, the metro train going through that corridor - just can’t ever see it happening.

Screwed again, not surprised. Parra gets two purpose-built stadiums in 40yrs, we get to move to an unsuitable location and a renege on a promised revamp

Even the new stadium which meant o replace SFS has been cut back and the existing tenants don't want to play there as it not what they signed up for.

Such a shame I feel like this once powerful club is hanging on to survive these days, nothing seems to go our way ever!!!

I now would like the club to turn its back on anz and play out of the new sfs (the heart of the city) not parammatta or maybe re develop belmore even though I was once against it we need to play out of a rectangular stadium.

It’s all about that dump Parramatta at the moment. I like Bankwest but the only other good thing about Parramatta is the road out of there

True - the ‘second city’ or whatever they’re calling it. It’s getting more injections than the Sharks dressing room and long overdue with the second airport and all that. That’s possibly why they picked the PH over ANZ.

What a great government.. Demolish the second biggest stadium in Sydney and fail to re-build a stadium in it's place.

Then they don't renovate the Olympic stadium as promised... What a rort.

It was always going to happen. The fact it wasn’t demolished after the GF last year and it stuck around for origin This year was its downfall. If it was in pieces now it would have had no option to continue.

It’s possibly the worst stadium in NSW for viewing any football code as it is a track and field stadium. Which mostly would be running so it’s just the perimeter that was focused on for viewing. They tried to make it rectangle and remove the wings. But it just didn’t work. Too slanted. And never had the atmosphere of being over the field. Level 1 and above actually had a better viewing. But anything on the ground level was very unappealing. And GA could barely see the other end.

hopefully we can come to an agreement forward to use Bankwest and the new sfs for moderate games. Have Belmore for out of town games and maybe keep anz for Souths games and maybe our finals games.

I also think Leichhardt is underused. Great stadium to watch the game on a Sunday afternoon. And even move 1-2 games a year to Campbelltown or Gosford. In effect we won’t have a “home ground” but anz with 15 thousand people isn’t much to cheer about.

The “upgrade” they had planned was lip stick on a pig anyway. Hopefully once things settle down with the economy they can redevelop the entire stadium properly.

This is bullshit. A new stadium generates jobs and is good for the economy too. This premier can go get fkd
