The Melbourne Storm could be in for a fight to retain the services of red-hot playmaker Cameron Munster following reports the in-form star has rejected the club’s latest contract offer to extend his contract beyond 2023.

NewsCorp reports Munster is preparing to test his value on the open market come November 1 as he looks to capitalise on a searing form surge that has also seen him move to fullback for Craig Bellamy’s side.

The player’s manager Braith Anasta confirmed Munster will look at his options during the off-season, and it’s believed Wayne Bennett and the Dolphins are primed to make a big-money move.

As revealed by NewsCorp reports earlier in the week, the Dolphins are preparing a bid in the vicinity of $5.2 million for the Queensland star, with Munster possibly earning an annual fee of $1.3 million.

“We are going to wait until November and test the open market,” Anasta told NewsCor

“I can’t see Cameron signing with Melbourne – or anyone else – before then.

“I can’t see Cameron signing with Melbourne – or anyone else – before then.

“Melbourne are definitely fighting hard to keep him, but at this point we won’t be doing anything until November.

“Melbourne’s deal is not at the point to convince Cameron to sign. They have put the offer to us a couple of times and we’ve said we’re not ready.”

Despite the contract issues, Anasta insists Munster is happy at the Storm – but the club have already secured a number of high-value players to big deals which will undoubtedly affect their ability to compete with other offers Munster may receive.

“The problem is (Melbourne) exhausted their salary cap when they re-signed all (Harry Grant, Jahrome Hughes and Xavier Coates) earlier in the year,” Anasta said.

“There isn’t much room to move there for Cameron.

“Cameron is such a great player and his performances are getting better every week. Why would he rush into a new deal?

Yep Munny is gonna be a Pilchard at that price and the 4 year term should seal it.

Is it not a conflict of interest having Anasta on 360 talking about other players (Ponga) wrong doings and saying that aren’t worth a million a year impacting their value as a player manager?
He's right but yes.

He’ll give the Dolphins some real credibility if he signs there. Dogs should just try their luck and make a play for 24 to come play FB. Munster will win the Dally M this year.

I’d be happy to pay him that for 24 on. Blokes one of the best

I kind of hope Dolphins continue to struggle to sign elite players. Not that I want them to fail but to see just what sort of impact a ‘supercoach’ like Bennett can value add to a playing group. What does a Bennet or a Bellamy really add? They can do wonders with a team of stars, but what about with a team of battlers. It would be interesting I reckon.

Bennett beat NSW with the worst QLD team I've ever seen on paper at the time. I think he's one of the best coaches in the NRL in regards to getting everything inside a player out of them. He's a very good man manager. The Dolphins have a bunch of rejects and old players on long term deals so it's going to be interesting to see how they go.

Agree with all that. No coaches with a roster stacked with shit players is ever lauded as being great. So called great coaches have all had the cream of the crop to work with. Sure they might be able to mould players attitudes a bit but I think blokes that are hailed as gun coaches wouldn't be able to get much out of a substandard roster of players.
