The one and only Augustus Phil Gould is already making his presence felt at Canterbury-Bankstown - the club he won a premiership with in his first season as a first grade coach all the way back in 1988.

There’s been plenty said and written about Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett’s treatment of halfback Kyle Flanagan this year but the truth is Gus was the one behind his latest NRL selection in Round 20.

Having started his new role as Canterbury-Bankstown general manager Gould suggested Barrett pick Flanagan at halfback and Corey Allan as fullback so the new Bulldogs boss could see what they might be able to bring to the club rolling forward.
It’s a smart play given the Bulldogs have got nothing doing aside from trying to avoid the wooden spoon for the remainder of the year.

Unfortunately the Dogs were carved up 34-6 by Gold Coast and Flanagan was subsequently axed for the third time this season - this time in favour of Jake Averillo and Bailey Biondi-Odo for Canterbury’s round 21 loss to Wests Tigers.

Allen was selected on the wing with the Melbourne-bound Nick Meaney returning to the fullback role.

It’s too harsh people lining up to kick Barrett when you look at the quality of the roster he’s had to work with. Judge the champion ex-playmaker when he gets a fair dinkum roster next year.

If he really wanted to see Flanagan and Allan in action, then he should of looked at video footage from from earlier in the year..

Seems like a destabilizing process and unnecessary.

What's the source of this article? Gould would have access to footage of all our games, but I guess it's possible he might want to see how certain players perform now - especially if he is deciding on retention prospects.

He didn't need to see them play lol, we've already seen enough. Might've wanted to give them a final opportunity to show something before kicking then out the door

It looks like Gus wanted to give them one final chance and they ended up proving what we already knew - they're plodders. This would also suggest Gus was behind BBO's promotion to the halves.

Hopefully this means Gus has seen enough of these 2 plodders and now he is trying to send Allen to Brisbane and Flanno to Sharks/Tigers/ESL.

So how long before Allan and Flanno are gone before end of 2022?

If he manages to ship out Allan and Flanagan that’s a massive win. I was excited by these signings at the time. Looking back it seems Baz wanted a few big fishes to appease supporters and took a risk signing them. Unfortunately for him it’s backfired.

i believe Gus is a smart man.
I believe Gus gave flanagan and Allen a chance to prove themselves and they fucked it up.
This is not Barrets or Gus's fault.
the responsibilty lies squarely on th3 shoulders on the 2 players.
Gould's hands are tied over current recruitment, but he will be all over our future development.

He is stuck with what we have for 2022, but he knows there are many coming off contract, so I guess he is looking at retention or development of players we can't move on, just to see what potential use they have for the team.

Don't ever underestimate the arrogance of Gus.. he could of made Barrett play them 2 just so he could show that he's got the power to do it and to show who's boss..

I think coaches should at least show what they can do with what they have instead of just blaming the roster.

It's concerning that Barrett cant get improvement out of one player.
