Only about 2 of the players we bought for next year are genuine utilities. It’s so exaggerated in the media.

Ur wrong, it is not sensationalisation. Lets break it down:

Kurt mann
178 games played
Fullback x 9, Wing x 19, Center x 45, five eight x 33, halfback x 6, hooker x 8, lock x 13, bench x 45
= UTILITY

Connor tracey
66 games played
Fullback x 6, wing x 15, Centre x 21, five eight x 9, halfback x 1, bench x 14
= UTILITY

Jerman salmon
61 games played
Five eight x 15, bench x 46 (came on in halves, Centre, second row from bench for penrtih
= UTILITY

Drew Hutchison
75 games played
Centre x 9, five eight x 22, halfback x 9, hooker x 11, bench x 24
= UTILITY

Blake taafe
65 games played (nrl/nsw cup)
37 x fullback, 7 x five eight, 9 x halfback, 12 x bench
= UTILITY

So 5 out of our 10 recruits are truly utilitys. Not a media exaggerate what so ever

He got that info from the source that told him about Luai Lol

To me a genuine utility is a player that can play both in the backs and in the forwards like Mann and Salmon. Not someone that can play a couple of positions in the back line. If that’s the case then you can call Kiraz a utility playing wing, centre and played fullback in the World Cup and handled it well. You can call Ponga a utility who played on the wing and bench for the cowboys and played Halfback, 5/8th and fullback for the knights.

Another thing to consider is that half of these players are probably not part of your best 17 and will definitely be playing reserve grade this year and used when needed for injuries etc.

It’s clear it’s not a Utility target recruitment drive but one that is focused on experience and players from winning cultures for positive and hard working attitudes and to provide some depth in a time where the player market is thin on quality players available.

The information can be found on the website Rugby League Project.

However the numbers shown here for Kurt Mann and Connor Tracey don't add up correctly.

Yeah I completely agree.
I see a utility also as a player who can play in the backs and in the forwards.
Most utility type players usually can cover anywhere in the backline, and the spine including hooker and lock.
The bigger utility type players can even cover 2nd row
Unusual they could aim ip in the front row though.

Typical salty responses from some after being slapped in the face with cold hard facts

I don’t get why the word utility is being thrown around like it’s a dirty word, why are some against the idea of having players that can cover different positions?

Is Burton a utility because he’s played at centre, 6 & 7 ?

A bunch of these blokes we’ve purchased come from successful clubs that had their squads set, these blokes were purposely being trained to play multiple positions to cover injuries, good enough for 1st grade and to cover for the incumbent player, but they weren’t there to get the gig full time.

Doesn’t mean these players aren’t good enough, just means they had a more experienced seasoned player in front of them.

A good bunch of these blokes have been stuck behind other players, given a chance to train and specialise in their best position, they just might surprise the hell out of a lot of us.

Agree. The game has changed with the concussion rule so you need players that can cover more than one position. Last year at times we had Waddell and Topine covering at centre and we all know how that worked out

It’s called depth. When injuries strike it will be good to have players ready to fill in who are capable.
