I read this article a few months ago. He was always more likely to stick to league because we can offer him more guarantees at his age.

Also in league if he lives up to his potential he will become a household name. In AFL he wont be a full forward so most likely would just be another player.

The spin will likely be that Gus is only good at junior systems and not NRL - leaving aside the fact that you get your juniors right and inevitably several of them end up in the NRL - something the Bulldogs lost their way on for almost a decade but we see is changing.
We once had a production line of talent with SBW, Thurston, Sherwin, Klemmer, Reynolds, Jackson, Finucane among others. Once again re-establishing junior talent pipelines & grabbing top talent from regional areas when they are 15-17yo will pay dividends 3-5 years later. Gus has the right approach. Mitchell Woods is another fine example of this strategy.

The Bulldogs have secured one of the hottest prospects across the NRL and AFL, beating the Swans to rising star Mitchell Woods. Woods is contracted to the Bulldogs for next year and in the last few days he and his family have committed to a long-term deal with club.

Woods, a rising halfback star, is considered one of, if not the, hottest young players in league and AFL.

He was being courted by both codes, with the Bulldogs and Swans in a civilised battle for his services. Canterbury coach Cameron Ciraldo was an obvious attraction for Woods and no less a judge than Brad Fittler picked Woods in his emerging Blues squad a year ahead of previous plans such is his talent.

Furthermore, Bulldogs GM Phil Gould took a personal interest in a player the Dogs hope can be one they build a team around in years to come, much like Penrith have done with Nathan Cleary. Woods will be the key figure in the halfback academy that the Dogs are running – a similar academy set up by Gould at Penrith resulted in the development of Cleary and Jarome Luai.

We are not comparing Woods to Cleary, but the Dogs are excited about his prospects.

“Mitchell Woods is one of the most extraordinary young talents you can ever imagine,” Gould said.

In recent years he has played rugby, AFL and rugby league, all at the highest levels of school sport and elite junior academies in these respective sports, all at the same time. There is no doubt he has a future in any one of these sports. We actually went and met with the Sydney Swans development staff to discuss his future. We both agreed he could make it in either code, but the time had come for him to specialise in one game.

“Both the Swans and Bulldogs told Mitchell we would support him no matter which sport he chose as his career, but we both agreed he needed to make that decision now, because his training for the respective codes was about to become very specialised and very different.

“Obviously the Bulldogs are grateful Mitchell has chosen to pursue a career in professional rugby league with our club. It’s wonderful for our club, but also great for the game of rugby league. We also know the guys at the Swans will be cheering for him.

“Mitchell was the captain of our Harold Matthews premiership-winning team this season. He was also the player of the year. He’s a hard-working and extremely dedicated young man. It’s exciting to think we will be a part of his development as a professional footballer. We are lucky to have Mitchell in our club.”

Smh weidler. Amazing work from the club. At one point everyone thought he was 100% gone
Every little victory COUNTS...
In Gus and the managing directors we trust !!!
It would be interesting to hear what the DOUBTERS the TROLLS and Brent can't-Read and his mate Buzzing Drunkfield are going to say now :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy:

Locking up ya promising young jnrs is always a plus so well done to this involved but fuck me “one of the most extrordinary young talents u could ever imagine”. Good way to put ridiculous amount of undue pressure on the kid. How often do we see this kinda talk lead to a failure of a young half. Very recently rings a bell as Gus put a similar wrap on Karl olupau as a half. Fast forward 9 months apparently hes not a half hes a lock lol
