There are some strange things going on at Belmore and it might not be the place where finals specialist Des Hasler should by plying his trade.
Last week we told you about the issues at the club, specifically the $1.25million blowout in the football club budget, which led to the decision not to re-sign a number of Hasler's staff. We also mentioned there was pressure on Canterbury boss Raelene Castle.
I took a call during the week from Bulldogs chairman Ray Dibb who disputed there was pressure on Castle. He said every board member had offered Castle their support after that item. That is interesting in itself. He didn't dispute the size of the blowout in the football club budget.
Now to the situation with Hasler. For some months now we have been told there is two-year extension on the table, and we have been told he is about to sign it. But now we have learnt the Bulldogs want to insert a clause into Hasler's new deal that allows them to terminate the contract if the Canterbury Bulldogs don't make the top four in 2018.
Now that is enough to cause a delay in any contact negotiation. From the Bulldogs point of view, it's a clear indication they have doubts about Hasler. From Hasler's point of view, it must be a stunning development.
Hasler has taken the Dogs to two grand finals. He has taken two clubs, Manly and Canterbury, to the past 12 finals series. It's the best record since Wayne Bennett's 20-year finals streak ended in 2011. Hasler is well liked by all the players he's coached, but Canterbury's inability to win a title has people asking questions.
No other coach with his record would have such a clause in his contract. And no coach would wear it with his experience.
This column approached Hasler's agent George Mimis for comment and he declined.
