It is interesting to have a look at the halfbacks for the 1988 season, there were a lot more good class halfbacks in that era, and having one was key to being in the top half of the comp.

Dogs (winners): Michael Hagan (the great Turvey in his final season came off the bench in the GF)
Tigers (runner ups): Gary Freeman
Sharks (minor prems): Barry Russell, won Rothmans medal that year
Canberra (3rd on table): Ivan Henjak, Ricky Stuart
Manly (4th): Des Hasler
Pansters (5th): Greg Alexander
Doncos (7th): Alan Langer
Souffs (8th): Craig Coleman, Phil Blake
Norffs (9th): Clayton Friend (rival to Freeman as Kiwi #7)
St George (10th): Brett Clark
Eels (11th): Peter Sterling played about half the season, Ella and Taylor filled in
Chooks (12th): Laurie Spina, Gary Wurth
Steelers (13th): Perry Haddock
Knights (14th): Steve Walters (not the QLDer), Robbie Tew, Steve Fulmer
Gold Coast (15th): Geoff Bagnall
Wests (16th): Trevor Cogger
Turvey was injured for a good portion of 88. However he still turned the game around in Lang Park against Langer when he came off the bench with his first touch and the Dogs came from behind to beat the virtual Origin Broncos side.
The 80's was the best era in terms of quality HB. 2000 onwards the overall quality of HB are lightweight compared to the Turvey Sterlo era.

Agreed. I'd count Cleary, Hughes, and DCE as being at or near the standard of 80s era HBs. Moses, Keary, Reynolds have their moments but are no more than the best of the rest. Every other current HB is still finding their way in first grade (Sexton, Clune, Schneider, Ilios, Flanagan), or a hasbeen that has never really shown more than a rare flash of brilliance (Hunt, Johnson, Townsend), or is more of a utility player with some running game than a genuine HB (Averillo/Wakeham, Hynes, Brooks).

We need a new Turvey to arrive at Belmore, fresh faced kid who really gets footy and has speed between the ears as well as in the legs. That appears to be what the decision makers are hoping for.

There will be never be another Turvey! Dogs have only won back to back GF when he was HB. He's the reason I became a Dogs fan back as a kid back in the 70's. Today's HB can only dream of having his acceleration, chip and regather, cover tackles, vision and creativity.
Of the current mob I think Sam Walker is the best attacking half. He's on 500k at the Chooks while we are paying Flanno 450k.
