The Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs are on the hunt for the last piece of the puzzle as they look to enter Premiership contention in 2025.

Bulldogs’ supremo Gus Gould has made his intentions very clear when searching the open market for players and he has reportedly identified Melbourne Storm star Ryan Papenhuyzen as his next target.

Papenhuyzen has 12 months to run on his current deal and is currently mulling over a two-year extension offer worth around $750k,000 per season.

The offer from the Storm means Papenhuyzen would have to take a significant in order to stay, leaving his future up in the air.

12 months after securing the services of Connor Tracey, the Bulldogs are seemingly already looking for an upgrade with Papenhuyzen but with the incumbent fullback having a career-best season, many are left wondering if this is the right move.

SEN's NRL expert Denan Kemp weighed up the pros and cons of both players but pondered if Tracey’s current contract value makes him the more attractive option.

“The Dogs are interesting because Connor Tracey has just killed it and also he is so flexible as a player, on top of all of that he wouldn’t demand more than maybe $500k a year if that,” Kemp said on SEN 1170's The B Team.

“I guess you’ve got to ask yourself, the bang for buck, is it worth paying Paps say $900k, is he $5-600k more valuable than Connor Tracey?

“Then the argument is, he may not be $5-600k more but he is 10 per cent worth more and that 10 per cent will get us into the top four.

“It’s a real tricky one.”

Although Kemp is likely leaning towards keeping Tracey, he did note the star power of Papenhuyzen and what that would mean for the Bulldogs' spine going forward.

“If the Bulldogs could get a guy like Ryan Papenhuyzen, that spine all of a sudden gets that Origin-level type player with Reed Mahoney and Matt Burton,” Kemp added.

“It’s not bad at all.”

Both is good. You can't escape the reality that Paps is a gamble, if he has a good season it probably means top 4 and a serious push for a GF. If he gets injured CT is a first grade worthy stand in.

Paps running off Amone. Just one big bopper and we're sorted.

If we get Paps and May we're sweet. Thompson would be a bonus.

We need a bit more X-Factor at fullback than Tracey especially now we've lost some with Foxx gone.

We never spend big and bid against others but hopefully on this occasion we are willing to slightly outbid the Sharks and Roosters. It's rare for a player of his ability to be available even. Can't waste the opportunity. To go to the next level we need a player who can make the difference in winning a few tight games.

I am sure our club will take all considerations into account...
Paps can be the Rockstar fullback we need but won't be available till 2026, he is over priced for a player that continually suffers from major injuries ask Melbourne,
IMO Gus should working on forcing Melbourne's hand into releasing Fa'alaogo !

Papenhuysen is obviously the better player of the two. However, he will command a massive salary and probably will spend a lot of time on the sidelines. Tracey is a cheaper option and has done everything right so far. I think the Papenhuysen money can be better spent somewhere else.

Would love both, Conner would be a great wing option or 5/8 if Burton was indisposed

Yeh if we can get papen in and move Tracey to wing and spend another 400k on Jacs wage to papen it’s wonderful.

Replace Sutton with Thompson and another 100/200k if he’s on 500 as reported and land may now for the 500k we have free and we are fucking laughing

Value is only one side of the proposition.
I think we can all agree Trace is the value pick, but what about the intangibles? Can Trace come up with that 2% play when we need it in a prelim?
That alone is priceless.

forget Roosters, they are currently shopping (and will likely get) a fullback from Newcastle that will catapult them into comp favourites, and a more than handy 5/8 at Parra…. Paps won’t even be on their radar now…
