Former Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs legend Andrew Ryan believes the contract extension for Matt Burton is incredibly significant for the club.

After months of speculation that Burton would sign with another club, the 22-year-old re-committed to the Bulldogs and will remain at belmore until 2025.

Ryan, who is currently an assistant coach at the Bulldogs, said Burton is instrumental to the Bulldogs’ premiership aspirations in the next few years.

“It is huge news for the club,” Ryan said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“For him to stay around for another four years after this year (is great). He still seems like that young fella from Dubbo that hasn’t changed.

“He’s a good team man and he’s a good family man. He’s certainly got plenty of skill.

“It’s massive news for the club.”

The Bulldogs have made a number of acquisitions in the off-season with none bigger than new head coach Cameron Ciraldo.

New import Viliame Kikau praised Ciraldo after he traveled to Fiji to attend the funeral of Kikau’s father.

Ryan described Ciraldo as a compassionate coach who will instill a defensive mindset onto the side.

“He’s been around footy for a long time and he’s always leant on that defensive mindset,” he stated.

“The thing that I have noticed is his care and he’s just a people person.

“Relationships are a big one and he wants to get to know his players.”

The Bulldogs begin their 2023 campaign against the Manly Sea Eagles on March 4 at 4 Pines Park.
