Top 5 Finals format

Anyone have an idea of how it worked?

First week -

2 v 3
4 v 5
1 gets week off

Second week -

Game 1 -Loser of ( 2 v 3 ) v winner of ( 4 v 5 )
Game 2 - Winner of ( 2 v 3 ) v 1st
Loser of ( 4 v 5 ) is eliminated

Third week -

Game 1 - Winner of game 1 in the second week vs loser of game 2
Winner of game 2 through to the final
Loser of game 1 eliminated.

Fourth week -

Grand Final

(A) = 4th VS 5th - Loser eliminated.
(B) = 2nd VS 3rd

Week Two
(C) = Winner of 4th/5th VS Loser of 2nd/3rd - Loser eliminated.
(D) = Winner of 2nd/3rd VS Minor Premiers (1st) - Winner into GF (Week Four).

Week Three
(E) = Winner of C VS Loser of D

Week Four
(F) Grand Final - Winner of D VS Winner of E

Using THIS system in 2011 ...
- Warriors, Cowboys, Newcastle would not qualify.
- Dragons would now be OUT.
- Week 2 : Wests would play loser of Manly/Brisbane. Loser of that match is eliminated.
- Week 2 : Melbourne would play winner of Manly/Brisbane for a spot in GF.

I don't mind the McIntyre system, but I hate that if say 3rd place finisher loses in week one and then a low ranked team wins and they play each other in week 2, the team that finished lower but won in week one gets the home advantage, I think that the better placed team should retain their home advantage throughout the finals.

Also - effectively - could the Minor Premiers only have to play 1 final to make the GF? Thats how this system works right?

Cause I think, where as it would be a much better system - gee thats a little easy

In afl the winning teams of 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 advance to the preliminary final games. The losers get the second chance and play the winners from the elimination games which are 5 vs 8 and 6 vs 7.

Top 4 play each other and bottom 4 play each other -
- Top 4 - The two teams that win go to the third week of finals while the two loosers get another chance.
- While the bottom 4 - the winners continue to week two while the loosers gets kicked out

Time to scrap the current system. Broncos finished 3rd, Tigers finisged 4th. Both teams won their first final.
This week Broncos play the team that finished 5th while the Tigers get to play the team that finished 6th. WTF??? The advantage to play a lower finished team only applies to the first week

Anyone familiar with a "double-elimination knockout" ?

With that system you have to lose twice before you're knocked out !!!

What does it matter?

In the current climiate, only the top 2 teams can get the week off. Who cares if the Tigers and Broncos won. So did Manly and Melbourne. Remember, if we had that format, the games would of been different.

I admit its a better system, but people are using the wrong reasons for why we need change. The bigger issue is 6th place getting a second chance after an absolute smashing by the Broncos. To be fair though, I think a top 5 would work better anyway. You shouldnt reward a team for being 12-12 in a season with a finals appearance.
