Dear Elder Kennel Folk,

I recall my late Uncle sledging the Bulldogs when I was younger. He was a Magpies man, and on top of hearing about Terry Lamb, he'd refer to us as "the Catholics" all the time, but I've never understood why.

Can anyone shed any light on how this came about ?

Dear Captain put it down to religious politics your question pretty much answers itself.

The great Bullfrog Peter Moore was a devout Catholic and probably enouraged it amongst his family and club.
Life would of been interesting for Kevin Moore.

Apparently only Catholics could play for the bulldogs back then.

Back in the day , before my time , only Catholics
went to heaven , all the rest of the people were
referred as publics , Catholics only married and
associated with other Catholics , if you went for some
jobs , they would ask if you were catholic ? And you
wouldn't have a chance if you weren't a tyke..
The bullfrog had the same values.....
Pretty sad really, have known people to leave
England in the old days as their families wouldn't
approve of a catho marrying a churchy

Funny how religion finds it's way into the most irrelevant of place. NRL should be a religion itself..

Its true , Bullfrog Moore was a devout Catholic ( although some of his practices were anything but ) , when he tried to sign Terry Lamb , Baa asked him ..... I thought you only signed Catholic players - he replied that although the Hughes boys were the Mortimers were not

I think that there were a couple of things that led to us being called the Catholics.

Bullfrog, our patriarch, would have held sway in that regard, the other was that for a long time Catholic high schools which played no other code of football than Rugby League had the knack of turning out quality players. I think St Gregory's Campbelltown and Red Hill College (Marist Bros) Forbes were a couple that provided us with very good young players.

quite simply gentlemen it is that most players in the 60's and 70's came from brothers ( st johns ), st christophers and of course the grubs at cheso and greenacre who were baptized and had their first communion before playing for the berries

Chester Hill players weren't grubs (reserve judgment on Greenacre) but the one thing we ALL had in common if we didn't play for them was that we hated Bankstown Sports.
