The game is different these days but we shouldn't disregard the athletes from the past as inferior without fully understanding the changes.

We look at Payne Haas as a phenomenon these days because he plays 60 minutes as a front rower whilst most of the middles play just over 40 minutes. Back in 1979, they had no interchange and only two reserves. Forwards played the full 80 minutes as there were no strategic replacements in case an injury occurred.

There was no match review committee or bunker watching every play, and, as a result, the game was a much more violent version than what we have today.

In other words, the game was very much about attrition which would see opportunities open up for the elusive, fast players as the bigger men fatigued towards the end of the game.
There should be be less interchanges. 6 at most, or even less and drop the bench to 3. Probably less injuries because forwards would train more for endurance than explosive power.

And bring back true scrums. They also help control fatigue.

What dimension were you born in?... The rivalry with Parramatta did indeed start in the 80's in this dimension.
The waste of space aka Nasheed has in the past declared he can do on the field everything that Turvey did.

With the HIA now entrenched in the game. You need to increase the bench numbers not reduce it.

I would actually increase the numbers. Making it a 7 man bench. But lose the interchange concept. Make it once you’re off your off like the game used to be.

With the HIA component. Something like the 17 as it is now. With three players on top of this designated as HIA replacements. 1 x Back, 1 x Forward & 1 x Utility.

who could forget Turvey's magical solo try in the 79 GF qualifier that put the Dogs in the lead over Parra.
Also love the solo call of the game by Rex Mossop. He was an absolute legend, told it as he saw it…didn’t give a f&*k about political correctness. RIP.

Agree. I think Rex Mossop was the best tv footy commentator - much better than Ray Warren and the neville that is calling the game on 9 these days.
