NRL has announced today they are scrapping the 7 tackle rule for the nines...

Id like to see it sort of scrapped in nrl...

Was initially implemented to create more attacking footy, and less dead kicks...
In some ways it is beginning to have the opposite effect (taking tackle of the fifth)...

Should it be more along the lines of; if kicked from outside the 20 then 7 tackles???...

It's too much of an advantage these days. Kicking the ball dead doesn't really slow the game down as long as teams can make quick taps from the 20 as long as all of their players are onside

Shouldn't be a 7 tackle set from a ball caught in goal, keep it for kicked dead though

I think it needs to be expanded to bombs as well. There are far too many "chance kicks" these days in the NRL and it makes the game boring. Sure you don't want 1 man hitups all the time / battering ram tries, but even so. Change the risk and reward.

Look at the olden days of league and it was all through the hands.

Should be changed as follows (though many will think this is dumb):
1. Attacking side bomb, and ball caught by defender in 10m of their goal line = 20m quick tap restart from catching player (6 tackles).
2. Attacking side kick ball and it goes over sideline = 20m restart to defenders.
3. Attacking side kick ball dead in goal (or over sideline in goal) = goal line drop out, with ball played by defenders, where it goes over sideline.

4. Attacking side caught with ball on the 6th tackle = 8 tackle set.

5. Try scored from bomb caught in goal by attacking side = 6 points + conversion.
6. Try scored from kicking through defensive line = 6 points + conversion.
7. Try scored in a set preceeding a 40/20 or 50/10 = 8 points + conversion.

This would increase the reward for a 40/20 or 50/10 attempt, whilst also increasing the risk of a kick going wrong or trying to score from a bomb.

But in the event a team was chasing points at the end of a game, it would see more 40/20 and 50/10 attempts, and more attempts to score from a kick (albeit with a higher risk).

#3 brought back fond memories of shifty kicking for touch on the optional restart... Loved that play...

Agreed, 7 tackle sets too much advantage these days. for such a minor play.
As others have said, make it tough again, bring back the shoulder charge but increase the penalty for high. And the Biff, too many little Yap Yap Dogs giving lip without anything able to be done. Haha.
And 5 minute Sin Bin.

What I hate about rugby league: 5-10 rule changes every freaking off season.

I've never liked the 7 tackle rule. It applies for some things and not others, and when it applies to kicks going dead, combined with the quick tap rule, gives too much advantage to the side returning the ball. I want more consistency - Rugby League is a 6 tackle sport has been for decades.

Agreed, they bought the rule in as a knee jerk reaction. There were a couple of instances where a team would kick deliberately dead, but not as often as they tried to make out, yet alone enough to make a rule change.

A team may knock on over the line trying to score a try and then the defending team gets 7 tackles. It's fucking rubbish.

If it's to stop teams intentionally kicking it dead, then limit it to kicks outside the 20. For kicks inside the 20, 6 tackles only

The problem with this rule, unlike so many others, is that they have attempted to put in a blanket rule across the board. IE - all 20 meter taps are 7 tackle sets.

Whilst I agree it should be utilised in some instances, teams who put grubbers through only for a teammate to drop it over the line is doing the exact opposite of encouraging attacking play.
