The Storm are set to be fined by the NRL after fielding 14 players for a few seconds in the second half of their dominant win over the Roosters.
The incident in question was triggered when Suliasi Vunivalu was concussed as he tried to tackle Siosiua Taukeiaho in the 60th minute of the Storm's 24-6 win.
Vunivalu stayed down and received medical treatment before being taken from the field for a head injury assessment.
When the Roosters restarted play they shifted the ball to their left edge and appeared set to make a break.
That's when Vunivalu, who had been replaced by Nicho Hynes, rushed back onto the field and turned a two-on-one situation back into a two-on-two.
Brenko Lee then tackled Josh Morris, bringing an end to any hope the Roosters had of scoring a long range try.
Melbourne had a 24-0 lead at the time but Vunivalu undoubtedly impacted play.
The result will likely be a fine for the Storm. An NRL source insisted the stripping of premiership points is not a possibility.
A League Central spokesperson said the incident would be reviewed.
"It will be reviewed as a matter of course along with other operational aspects of the round on Monday," a spokesperson said.
The incident was missed by both Nine and Fox League commentators as Luke Keary was struggling mightily to stay on the field while nursing a broken rib.
The Storm can consider themselves a little lucky, given Vunivalu's impact on the play itself.
The NRL stripped the Bulldogs of two premiership points in 2009, when a trainer called Andrew Ryan onto the field while attending to an injured Michael Ennis.
The man that replaced Ryan, Ben Roberts, then scored as the Bulldogs skipper lined up in the attacking line.
The Broncos were stripped of two premiership points five years earlier when Corey Parker illegally entered the field , despite being told not to do so by the interchange official, and then crossed for a try which levelled the scores against the Tigers.
Melbourne will almost certainly be without Vunivalu for their blockbuster clash against Parramatta on Thursday.
The star winger has suffered a suspected broken jaw, joining the Storm's already sizeable casualty ward.
Jahrome Hughes, who was lauded by Craig Bellamy for stepping up in the playmaking department in the absence of Cameron Smith and Cameron Munster, will be sidelined as well after he picked up a groin injury in the win over the premiers.
"I'm really proud of how our guys stuck in without the two Camerons," Bellamy said on Thursday night. "I thought Hughesy really stood up, Ryley Jacks was good, Paps [Ryan Papenhuyzen] and Brandon [Smith] were outstanding."
Cameron Smith, Munster and Hughes are all expected to return against Manly in a fortnight.

Didn’t we get stripped of points for having 14 on the field a few years back?

If I recall correctly, one of our players was going off, so he didn’t even interfere with the play.

Could be wrong though.

Yes we did. It's mentioned in the article.

What a joke.
Rules only apply those clubs that the NRL want to lose matches.
Clear preferential treatment for all to see.

this is the most concerning part... prior to any review an NRL source is saying the punishment has already been determined...‘insisted’

What the fk happened to consistency? (Not that the NRL were ever known for being consistent.....ever - just take a look at the current SBW debacle).

We lost 2 points for the same breach - why aren't the Storm?

I still remember that smug corrupt prick Greenburg said “The most overrated word I hear in rugby league is consistency.” last year. It's a joke.

Losing those 2 points ended up costing us the minor premiership! Assholes

Yep the only team since 2000 to have points stripped...The Broncos one was a carbon copy of ours with the match winner being scored whilst 14 men on the field yet they had their points reinstated...
Round 2 2009.....
  • The Bulldogs had their two competition points stripped as they breached NRL match rules by fielding 14 players during the scoring of the match-winning try.

The Bulldogs will exhaust all options in a bid to appeal the severity of the NRL's decision to strip the club of two competition points for having 14 players on the field when they snatched victory from Penrith last Saturday.

The NRL issued the Bulldogs with a breach notice alleging the club had 14 players on the field when Ben Roberts, the last replacement to come on, scored the match-levelling try in the 78th minute.

Winger Hazem El Masri then booted the winning conversion to give the Bulldogs a 26-24 victory and move top of the NRL table.

Roberts was cleared of any wrongdoing in his interchange with skipper Andrew Ryan, the captain instead found to be the 14th man culprit.

Eagle view cameras showed Ryan re-enter the field of play from the far touchline at the request of a trainer as hooker Michael Ennis was being treated for injury.

The second-rower took his position in the attacking line during the try-scoring play with Ennis still on the field.

Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said the club accepted the NRL's decision but would look at appealing the severity of the penalty.

"We've viewed the footage with the NRL and accept that we had 14 players on the field for a short period of time," said Greenberg in a statement.

"We are now considering our ability to appeal the decision to deduct the Bulldogs of two competition points.

"The loss of points is an extreme punishment and the club will investigate all options to appeal the breach notice."

It is the first time since 2000 that an NRL club has been stripped of points for having too many players on the field.

North Queensland were the last club to have points deducted in 2000, while previous instances were Western Suburbs (1975), South Sydney (1988), Gold Coast (1992), Balmain (1993) and Auckland (1995).

Brisbane were stripped of two points in April 2004, but had them re-instated on appeal a month later.

The Bulldogs have five business days to appeal the breach notice, until then they will remain on four competition points.

Regardless of the outcome the Panthers, who were leading the game before the Bulldogs scored with 14 men on the field, will not get awarded the victory or competition points.
Panthers chief executive Michael Leary said the club would accept that decision.

"I just think at that time of the game, I don't think it had any bearing on the result," Leary said.

"We'll just take it as it is.

"In history gone by if a side loses the two points, you don't get the two points anyway."

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said it was clear Ryan was on the field when he shouldn't have been.

"When the media first raised this matter the speculation was around the Roberts-Ryan interchange," Annesley said.

"This always appeared to be conducted properly but we could not confirm that until we received extra vision today.

"In the process, however, it became clear that after Andrew Ryan left the field on the far side and was walking away from the play, he then appeared to be called back on by a trainer.

"There are clearly fourteen men on the field when the try is scored."

Yes it happened a couple of times. Apart from what jof mentioned I remember another time where Jacko got done right at the end of a game.

This has happened a few times & EVERY time if it was the winning team, they had the points taken off them. If they lose it's a fine. But hey, this is Vlandys so I guess he likes to decide who will win the comp. #NRLCorruption

Well if it was you had to tell Bellyache...how long do you reckon it would take you to front him with the news? Lol

Vlad be needing a few bottles of smelling salts to summon up the courage to even tell him about a fine, let alone losing 2 points.

Yet another reason to not let NRLol walk all over you.

TWO WEEKS and counting.......
They are playing the "wait it out" game so that eventually people forget that it even happened.

We all know from past experiences, if it was the Bulldogs they would have been all over it like a rash and our points docked and club fined within the blink of an eye.
