Former Hull FC forward Steve Folkes is being tipped as a potential successor to Peter Sharp who has become the first engage Super League coaching casualty of the season.

But the NRL Grand Final winner won't be available until the end of the current Aussie campaign when he quits after 11 years in charge of the Bulldogs.

Leeds Rhinos chief Graham Murray is also in contention and he could move to Humberside immediately after being released as head coach of North Queensland Cowboys.

The axe has been hovering over Sharp's head for several weeks. The board's patience finally snapped after Sunday's defeat at Harlequins that plunged the Black and Whites to second bottom of the table.

AdvertisementThey've won only four of their 14 league fixtures, including two defeats against bitter rivals Hull KR, though Sharp has had to contend with a horrendous injury list. Chief executive James Rule, already under fire for allowing Hull to field an ineligible player in two rounds of the Challenge Cup, has put Richard Agar in charge for Sunday's visit of St Helens.

Hull narrowly escaped being thrown out of the competition but could still pay a heavy fine.

Agar may also come into the frame as Sharp's long-term successor though a lack of head coach experience at the highest level may count against him.

Rule said: "Neither party wish to make any further comment on this decision. We will not be making any comment on potential replacements at this stage."

The 53-year-old Aussie may not be the last Super League boss to be axed this season. Pressure is mounting on Warrington boss Paul Cullen for a second successive campaign and also on Castleford chief Terry Matterson.
Very interesting...
